How true are those words regarding the old fashioned pubs. Here in Kent we had a thriving bar billiards community in Medway, with over 70 teams in 4 leagues a few years ago, and the Canterbury League as Chris Saville has pointed out on many occasions on this forum had over 100 teams. that league is now defunct, and my own league is down to 10 teams, and possibly only 9 next season. The Maidstone league has only 5 teams left, but do not want to amalgamate with the Medway league, so I can see that here in Kent within possibly the next 5 - 10 years, our game will just be a memory. Some of the old venues that had bar billiard tables ar now either Chinese Takeaways, or Indian takeaways, of have been comverted back to its original state, of 1 of maybe 2 private dwellings. I hope that I am being pessimistic, but somehow I do not think so.

davemay paints a gloomy but true picture - the Portsmouth League has dropped from 70 teams to 12 in 20 years. We now have only 6 venues with 10 teams playing in 5, two of which are clubs. New players have little or no opportunity to develop their skills. Sadly a very bleak future.

Not to mention, Pompey, that while your league survives, three others in Hampshire have gone (Andover, Winchester and Southampton).
Even Sussex, while strong in Leagues (10 still going), has seen two vanish (Portslade and Crawley). And those that remain are mostly down to a single division - or divisions within a division.
