This can be a pub or club, past or present, somewhere you have fond memories of. Can be a favourite watering-hole (maybe long since demolished), or what struck you at the time as an excellent venue for a finals or Presentation night.
Over to you.

Well i would have to say my local, the Tandem (Kennington). I started my pool career there and have now finished it there. Now i am playing Bar Billiards there (apart from a Thursday where i am playing at Didcot Con Club) Most people who visit there on away teams will comment on how good the food is. It's not like it was a few years ago, but still generally one of the best around. Would be good to hear other people's views on the food. With the Bar Billiard table being put back under the bay window (for those that know the layout of the pub) it is out of the way of the bar, so a much better position.

You are indeed lucky, Milhouse, to find a local you are happy with straight away. The first pub I was really happy at was the White Hart, Horsham, a really intimate little place with a great atmos. John Slee and Dick Cable also started off there, also Micky Fairs's dad was in our team (this will only mean something to Sussex players of long standing). Sadly the pub got demolished to make way for an arty-farty wine-bar type monstrosity known first as the Hop Picker and now the Smith and Wesson.
There have been other pubs I have been really happy playing at -I had my own china mug with a pair of swinging t!ts which was kept behind the bar at the Michell Arms; I played for the Victory (where Sparky and Charlady play now) for an unbroken eight year period which sadly came to an end when the Landlady died which sent her husband the landlord doo-lally.
Then there was the Windmill Crawley - golden years with two great Captains, Neville and Tony, who'd drive the team everywhere. Both sadly no longer with us.
But the pub with which I've had the most enduring association is fifteen miles away from my door : The Railway Inn, Billingshurst. I first used to pop in there after playing table-tennis at Billingshurst youth club, forty years ago. The pub has kept a bar billiards table all that time and despite being redecorated countless times over the years, still seems to retain the same welcoming atmosphere. 8-)

Whilst on the subject of the Victory.... Bumped into Tim Newnham coming out of Handcross Village hall on Tuesday, tried to talk him into entering the club but he was being driven, maybe another day...

Can be what struck you at the time as an excellent venue for a finals or Presentation night. I actually like the Worthing venues the Downview and the Inland Revenue SC for the Sussex competitions. Likewise in Surrey, the Frenches Club and the Limes (Merstham).

On same subject, Roy Wells mentioned in his newssheet that Pam Peacock has signed for the Victory. Another name from the past : former ladies singles finalist, and multiple winner of the mixed doubles with husband Tim back in the late eighties/early nineties.

Has to be the Carpenters Arms :D They have the BEST table I have ever seen. Plus it's only 15 miles to get to. Plus they even phone up on the night to call off a match, even after sandwiches are made. Now you can't beat that ::) :P

There were some nice pubs in Wisborough Green that I always used to look forward to playing at: (the Cricketers, Bat & Ball, Fox & Hounds). And in Mid Sussex, likewise any pub in Cuckfield (the Ship, Kings Head, White Hart, Wheatsheaf) or Lindfield (Red Lion, Bent Arms, White Horse, Snowdrop).

The best venue here in little Cambs has to be the SMB SSC.
Here are a few things that make this SSC win for me:
Fantastic Food :) I love good food, they do Chicken drumsticks and roast potatoes and sausages the list goes on.....
Great prices :) The beer and Coke is CHEAP because it's a SSC and the table takes 50p :o
Great Table :) I love the table, even though the last game I had on there I got was 0 :-[ but that was because I hit the black peg ::) Revenge will be mine Master Elmer ;D
NO LOUD MUSIC ;D great for concentration and I don't have to listen to Dido or something ;)
Great venue and a great team. I hope they continue for years to come :)

I think everyone will excuse Johnny's nievaty but he has not played inter-area at SMB (Six Mile Bottom). I'm sure there are plenty of players who still wake up in the middle of the night in a hot sweat remembering their game at Six Mile. The speed of the table, the room temperature and the short drive will come back to haunt a number of our so called stars?? Anyone like to recollect their game at the Club of Dreams!!

I ain't being nieve at all. Keith you have a dim view on me don't you :D ;) I am sure Keith loves you, as we all do. You are not naive at all! Just can't spell naive. I believe I was part of one of only two Inter-Area teams ever to win at the Six Mile Bottom Club. It was finding it that I found the problem. When I stopped to ask a local, before I asked what I was looking for, he said "oh, are you looking for the club?". It was just as if we were Dorothy looking for the Wizard of Oz, and the Tin Man, the Lion and the Scarecrow etc had already passed him.

Did you have Elsie with you at the time ? ;D To Johnny: I love loud music playing, though I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, and Neville our captain used to throw his jacket over one of the speakers in the Windmill. Q will tell you, first Inter-league away game I played for him was at the Elms in Worthing. They had a live band and they were very good and very loud. I was on a 7k break and immediately the band finished a number I played a duff shot and came off. Someone jokingly admonished the band leader afterwards over it ! ;D Now if Dido were there to serenade me, I might even make the Holy Grail of 20k. ;)

For me the best venue was the Inn on the Park in Jersey. Cracking venue with a great atmosphere. Best venue 1) Inn on the Park 1986 2) Inn on the Park 1987 3) Inn on the Park 1988 etc etc etc - you get the picture! Great for viewing. Room to move around. Club underneath (and young enough to go clubbing then!). Restaurant up top. Beach over the road to recover. Over 600 entries one year I believe. 20 years ago this November was my first visit - the late Dave Harris won it at 500-1 Never the same when it moved to the de Normandie - hoping the Ommaroo will do us proud this year

Ditto with the Inn On The Park, irreplaceable :'(
It will be interesting to see if entries pick up at all with the move to the Oomarroo. I know there were people in my group who stopped going because of the dreadful smoke and the stifling heat at the De Normandie. It might take a year for the word to get around as the new venue is an unknown quantity for almost everyone.

Over 600 entries one year I believe. You guys do like to exaggerate! Highest entry: 524 in 1988, the same year Cyril Vibert set the record for the best break in the competition, 16,620 in the 3rd place play-off, against Paul Sainsbury. Sorry for mentioning that, Paul! But the last time it was over 300 was 1996, the first year of the De Normandie!

Have to agree about the Inn on the Park, not just because i won back to back BIOC titles there, but the viewing was excellent and the atmosphere terrific, never repeated at the De Normandie. Bring on the Ommaroo! ;)

Over to you. This thread was started back in 2006 - nearly 8 years ago - and how times change ! Much discussion on Jersey (Inn on the Park v De Normandie/Ommarooo) and in the meantime the Merton has been established as a prime venue. How do you reckon this compares with the others ? Also in that time Surrey lost the Frenches (great venue for comps) and Sussex have become established at two venues (Roffey SSC and Hurstpierpoint SC) - neither of them coastal ! And Guernsey Open is about to enter its 7th year ..... how does Les Rocquettes compare with the Peninsula and the Wayside Cheer ? From a personal point of view (locally) the best home venue I've ever had and which rendered four and a half happy years (Mill House, Ifield) has just shut for good but the Windmill Crawley has provided a good replacement, and the dear old Railway keeps rolling along.

Ive got to put forward the club ive been tied with ever since i was a much younger nipper, Berinsfield Community Association Social Club! That place is like a second home to me, ive known everyone in there for years and on a Thursday night (Oxford League night!!) the atmosphere is phenominal as the place is packed, and everyone is lovely! One of the better tables in the league too which im sure Mr Trafford will lament ;) ;) #defacatestirring
