I have a player in my team who has played for the same team, at the same venue, every season since 1968. Can anyone beat this?

Interesting topic for discussion, SpecialOne.
You could be laying claim to a double record, as your team the St Francis are also unique in Mid Sussex in having maintained an unbroken run for 40 years.
So I'd also ask "what teams in any League can trace their origins back that far ?"
Some teams that come to my mind as having a long tradition are the Three Bees in the Billingshurst League and the Crawley Club in the Horsham League. But both teams started off in different leagues - the Three Bees in the Horsham League in 1966 before switching in 1995, and the Crawley Club who were in the Crawley League until its demise in in 1989 before being admitted into the Horsham League.
My Redhill teammate Dave Snashfold is renowned as having played for the Black Horse Reigate for 30 years up until the pub closed for a re-fit as a Korean restaurant in 2003.
And as a venue, the Railway Billingshurst always seem to have had a team for as long as I can remember, and the same pub atmosphere as when I first used to go there forty years ago for a quick bevy after playing table tennis at the youth club.

Peter is the player in question. however he tells me the team had been playing for four years when he joined, so are we the oldest Bar Billiards team around?

Better re-phrase the claim, Shaun, to 'longest-established team around' as no doubt the Elms (Terry Denyer, John Hayward etc) will lay claim to being the 'oldest Bar Billiards team around' ;D And of course, in Mid Sussex circles it has to be the famous Z's (ave age 62.5) 8-)

You are quite right Clive, longest established, playing every year at the the same venue, would be more correct than oldest. How could we be the oldest with young blades like myself in the team.

Not sure we can match that in W Sx. There may be players who have been on the scene for something approaching 35-40 years; but thanks to fickle landlords and breweries, there are, unless anyone else knows better, no original venues left!
There are teams which have survived by becoming nomadic, so the same bunch will pop up year after year in new venues - but stability in terms of venue is not a feature - it's partly why we are so spread out geographically.
If forced, I would suggest that the oldest surviving venue might be the Coach & Horses in Compton - and by virtue of not taking a sabbatical here & there, Keith Mouncher our longest serving player. Keith may actually be getting close to the 40-year mark lpaying wise!
On the other side of the coin; I may hold the record in our league for having represented the greatest number of teams; at the last count, some 10 venues past & present, have suffered my presence for a season or more! 8-)

Tonight I won my tenth open singles title in the Dover and Deal League Finals Night, exactly forty years after winning my first.
Anyone got a wider span than that??
Well done to my team for taking the Challenge Cup as well.

Well done Sav, the old boy has obviously still got it.
But it sounds as if you've been a regular performer: I managed a barren spell of 21 years between winning the Mid Sussex Singles in 1983 and then again in 2004. Anyone beat that ? ;D

Talking about long service and the number of teams played for over the years I don't know if I hold the record in the local area for the most teams/venues played for. I started in 1972 at 15 playing in the Littlehmpton League for the Locomotive by the station, which my father was the landlord of. After moving to Worthing in 1981 my list of teams and venues have read as follows: Broadwater Club, (Then a break of about 3 years), Horse & Groom, Brunswick, Broadwater Club (A & B), Ham, Downview, L. & S. Legion, Broadwater Club (A new team I set up) and most recently the Dolphin. I have more than once been referred to as a journeyman. So what!! ;D I like my bar billiards and will play for anybody who dares ;D to have me. Next season I start playing for the new Schooner B. So in the last 35 years I have played for 11 teams. Oh and that is not counting playing for the Schooner in the Brighton League. Can anybody match that record? There is bound to be ;D

Ok, Dave has turned this thread completely on its head. It was started to find if anyone has played for the same venue in all their long career.
Being fickle by nature, I can lay claim to TWENTY separate venues in 40 years of playing !
Here's mine: Horsham League 1968-2004: Sunallon Club; White Hart; Six Bells; Railway (3 separate stints); Queens Head (Hor); Bell; Queens Head (Bolney); Windmill (Craw); Black Dog; Rising Sun; Handcross SC.
Billingshurst League 1970-2000: Six Bells; Red Lion; Horse & Groom; Michell Arms; Green Dragon (2 separate stints); Bell; Railway.
Crawley League 1977-1980: Brewery Shades.
Mid Sussex League 1981- ; Victory; Queens Head (Bolney); Windmill (Craw); Handcross SC
Redhill League 1998- ; Black Dog; Flying Scud; Prince of Wales; South Park CC.
Steve Mariner did a bit of research on this one a few years ago for a quiz for his Sussex website, and it was discovered there were a handful of people similarly well-travelled, but the person who actually held the record for playing at different venues was Keith 'Noggs' Newman (now the landlord of the Hare and Hounds, Cowfold).

By the way I also missed out stating that I have also played for the West tarring Club and the Windmill. That's an extra two onto my tally. But I don't think I can make 20. Though I have some 5 years to catch up. :) :)
