Watermill 'B' 1, Handcross 'Z' 4 (played @ St Francis)
Considering the table has been moved upstairs into its new location the snooker room, the St Francis table did not play too badly. Just a bit slow at the back, you had to make the most of it whilst on the break.
Tony Williams 660, Alan Downs 5310 Martin Range 690, John Turner 1670 Sabina Williams 750, Mick Holmwood 3900 Paul Blackburn 1730, Johnny Haigh 1170 Steve Lathwell 1120, Barry Timson 1250
Thanks to our opposing captain Martin for checking with the Club first and managing to blag some (gratis) food out of them, not usually expected for a Team Knockout event.

Team Plate Result
CKRBL 2 Hurst Club 3 ;D
Ted Stringer 2760 - 2930 BB Warrier ;D Having missed the opening break shot (by miles! ???) I struggled to pot anything for ages, with Ted building up a solid lead before he made an error which gave me a chance to get back into the match, eventually winning with the last ball in the 100 hole. Unlucky Ted, you deserved to win...... 0-1 ;)
Jenny Edwards 2590 - B/P BB Reaper :'( Jenny played a solid game to gain a well deserved victory with the Reaper having a nightmare before falling on his own sword at the end. 1-1 ???
Shaky Coles 1470 - 1580 The Old Fella :) Neither player really able to get to grips with the table, with Roy just edging the victory in the end. 1-2 :)
Peter Edwards B/P - 1960 Papa Hall ;) Another game where the table got the better of both players, Papa Hall eventually coming out on top by keeping more of his scores while big Pete followed the Reapers finish.....! 1-3 ;) ::)
Derek Taylor 3120 - 240 Rob Hall :( Rob decided to knock over the Black Peg (and numerous Whites!) while Derek played a solid game to give him a comfortable victory. 2-3 :(
Although it was an enjoyable evening, this was due entirely to the good spirit and banter between the 2 team involved, the table at the Windmill is absolutely AWFUL........ >:( :P
The Red Spot is at least 1.5 inches too far forward..... there is a mark on the table that looks as if it could have been where the red spot used to be, in about the correct position, so it would seem as if someone has moved it....... ??? The table is noticeably uphill on the right hand side, has a roll to the left and is so slow that you could watch paint dry faster! Because of this you have to hit the ball harder to have any chance of potting anything, with the pegs waiting to claim any balls that don't go in because it comes back faster downhill. >:(
In addition to this, NO FOOD was provided by the venue, although the table had been confirmed in advance.

In addition to this, NO FOOD was provided by the venue, although the table had been confirmed in advance. They're not really obliged to in a Team Cup fixture as a neutral venue, Warrior. Though it's the done thing that if the teams want food they arrange it with the landlord in advance and are prepared to contribute towards it.

I'm pretty sure that Jenny spoke to them earlier this week, although I might be wrong.....?
I suppose that I can understand that, although I think that every neutral venue I have played at before in cup matches have always come up with something in the way of food - maybe I have just been lucky in the past! :-)

I'm sorry tommo, I disagree - I think part of the 'obligations' of a venue hosting a league team is to cater for neutral table games in the same manner as home games. Of course it goes without saying that: a The food has to be explicitly ordered, it is not enough to just book the table. b The landlord may wish to make a charge (within reason) c If food isn't normally provided to the home team (like at Hurst Club) then no objection should be made to the teams bringing in their own food. Edited to add: Of course it is not up to me, but I would suggest that if a venue is not prepared to provide food (at a reasonable cost) when requested, they should not be eligible to host neutral table team competitions. (Excepting again the Hurst Club, where teams can bring their own food)

I agree Dave, the table was shocking. i would like to write how bad the table was but i cant because the language is not allowed!!!!
Regarding food-Jenny did try to phone the windmill but could never get an answer from them, i know how she feels, i had to bokk the table last year for a match i tried all week to get hold of them and in the end i was so ticked off trying to get hold of them i rang on a sunday morning at 7am and did not stop ringing untill they answered.

If the red spot looks wrong it is fairly easy to check as in rule below and mark the position and play from there.
Another spot shall be fixed in the centre of the table with its centre not less than six and three quarters inches and not more than seven and one sixteenth inches from the centre of the break spot on the "D". This shall be known as the red spot.
After all most teams must have something about 7 inches to measure it with!
Also it has been known in the past for the Windmill to refuse to supply food.

And see Mama Hall's earlier post where she said in the Team Cup it's up to the team drawn as the Home Team to check with the venue if they want food to be laid on. Handcross used to provide food for free, but changed the system last year and we now have to pay £10 for food. I collect £2 a head from my players to cover this, but am not prepared to collect any more for when there happens to be a neutral game there. Don't mind meeting anyone halfway, and paying a token amount towards it, but that would have to be out of my own pocket, I'm not asking any more of my players. Sorry !

If it is not usual for a neutral venue to provide food, then I will have to remember that in future..... having not eaten before I came out, I was starving by the end of the evening, although obviously I am not going to fade away.....!! :D
However, the food wasn't really my main complaint - it was the table! I have put more of my thoughts on this subject under the heading of "Table Conditions", which I think is the best place for it to be!

I think you misunderstood my post tommo. :( When I said: I did mean that the booking should be made by the first named team, in line with Lorraine's post. It is then up to the two visiting teams to agree how to pay the charges. We have normally agreed to split all costs with the other team, although last night the Windmill proposed to run a football card to pay for the food and we happily agreed - especially as Pam won the prize :) However, it seems from what the Reaper says that no contact was made with the Windmill by the visiting teams, therefore they couldn't be expected to provide food. Dave - it would be highly unusual for a neutral venue (for a team competition) not to provide food, provided they have been asked. The exceptions here are Hurst Club, where teams are free to bring in food (or have it sent in, eg takeaway) and CKRBL where a kind club member will provide a lovely buffet for a reasonable sum (as she does for home matches)

I know that Jenny was trying to contact the Windmill, but it would seem that she was not able to get through from what BB Reaper says above.
Next time, I will just make sure that I eat before I go out to a neutral venue. :-)

Don't get me wrong, either.........speaking for Handcross, they will be only too happy to provide food if booked beforehand (at reasonable notice) and provided that it is paid for. In fact they make far too much for our home games and much of it gets wasted, hence my reluctance to 'lay on the fatted calf' last night.
What does wind me up is when (as has happened several times) the home team have forgotten to book the food and just say "sorry, there's no food tonight" and leave it at that.
A year ago I forgot to put one in the diary, but to make it up to the away players (Jock's team I believe) we paid for a round of drinks for them with the money that we would normally have shelled out for the food.

We had a similar instance when I used to play there, so we ordered up a Pizza to be delivered. (thats when we found out that a certain member of our team had never eaten pizza before and had no idea if he liked it) ???

From problems we had last year when booking the Windmill table for an Open Doubles match, we discovered that the landlord doesn't answer his phone, and I think it's because it's linked through to his private room and thus doesn't ring in the bar. We were advised to do any contacting via Steve Smith, the team captain (and a jolly nice bloke :D ) :o Oy!! DOES ANY ONE DO ANY WORK, OR GO TO BED WHEN YOU GET HOME. No Jenny, of course nobody does any work... What do you think this is ? ;D

Hey Jen, sorry, it certainly wasn't meant as a criticism of you that there was no food last night....... :-*
I know that you were trying to get hold of the Windmill on Monday night and must have been having a ciggie break when you were telling people that you hadn't been able to get through to them. :-[
It's a shame you weren't able to get through to them, if I remember correctly they did some mean hot dogs when we were there before Christmas...... they were nearly good enough to make up for the state of the table that time!! ;)

Thats because the phone at the Windmill is in the flat upstairs & does not ring in the bar I know because I had the same problem when trying to book a singles match in the end I phoned Steve Smith & arranged it through him, What a way to run a buisness not answer the phone in working hours. Edit. Whoops just read page 2.
