Much drama in the last round of Interleague Division One matches: Redhill visited the Swan knowing that a favourable result could mean we were runners-up - or even winners depending on the Brighton A v Worthing A result - but defeat would mean the heartbreak of finishing third.
On the face of it, anyone studying this match scorecard might be forgiven for thinking "well all of the games went with the break" - but that would not give the full picture.
Worthing B 3, Redhill A 4
Phil Oakley 3850, Jason Wadsworth 840 Bill Kerr 0, Geoff Jukes 2250 Brian Richards 1540, Vernon Sparkes 3380 Nick Brown 3560, Laurie Roberts 2430 Gary Ridley 3950, Gary Powell 5210 Dave France 2780, Terry Oakley 5030 Doug Mahy 6050, Colin Robbins 3940
Phil Oakley continued his good form in this competition - he has, I am reliably informed, won every game. Geoff struggled to make any sort of impact in game two, and was caught at the end by Bill who worked out his calculations correctly after the bar, only to fell the black going for 200 to win. Vernon played some nice crisp shots to put us 2-1 up, and the captain gambled on Laurie against the break this time as he got 10k-plus on our last visit a fortnight ago. But the Worthing captain kept him at bay for the entire game and Laurie never did get the break back. 2-all. The next two games were incredibly tense, and credit must be given to all four players. The ever-reliable Gary Powell was off the table when he caught his third split shot too thick, and Gary Ridley built up a lead of two thousand. But the Redhill Gary got 'em back straightaway and he then matched the two thousand and raised two thousand. Worthing Gary fought bravely but was only able to halve the deficit. 3-2 to Redhill. With the pressure tap turned full on, a very strange game of bar billiards followed: Dave France usually starts his game like a cat on hot bricks, then if you give him that one chance too many he slots into the groove and you can only stand and watch while he plays the table out. On this occasion Terry started slowly and Dave scratched about and Terry was suddenly 4k up. Dave missed again, Terry got the balls back and a look of relief was spreading over Redhill faces. But - what's this ? Tel only managed 300 and left a one-up short. Dave was at the table and attacking it like a good'un, and he had six minutes left which was time a'plenty. But he got up to 3700 and caught a wicked roll or had a kick or something and it was Tel's go again. Tel made a bad choice of shot which left a ball right behind the 10 hole and missed at it. Dave now had a formality to complete but needed to score off that ball, went too close and black-pegged it. He then still managed a quickfire 2780 in the time left - to confirm that the game should have been his if luck had been on his side.
So - very unlucky the Worthing 'B' who were left with a crumb of comfort from the news that their 'A' side stood locked at 3-all with Brighton's Chris Tupper playing Neil Higgins in the deciding frame.
They certainly looked after us well, prawn sandwiches, and even some of Jacqui Adams' birthday cake was sent over from the WAGs' table ! A great evening - aside from the obvious reason of the result.

I have just come back from the Tap after a few beers with Tupps and can tell you that we won 4-3 against Worthing A.
We were hoping for that result of 4-3 for Redhill, but we failed to capitise. Captain Richard Wooton was unlucky enough to miscue on a 8k break which effectively lost him the game against Mal Spier putting us 2-1 down rather than 2-1 up. Both Tony Lewis & Martin Smith performed with the break to take out Gareth Lloyd and Chris Reeves.
When I went on at 2-3 we knew the title was lost as we learned the 4-2 score at the Swan meant that 4-3 win was no good. Well done Redhill, you came form nowhere to win the title, and that amazing 7-0 win against Worthing A proved crucial as you beat us by just one leg!
I am sure someone will post the ful scores later.

In the final match of the season we ended on a mid Sussex V Mid Sussex battle fought out at The Hurst Club. Leaving Sir Jock O the strap V Chris Kirkham Sir Jock pegged his opening break Chris knocked up a 1000 break & stayed ahead throughout the game, but Jock was at the table as the bar dropped & with 6 whites in the tray needed 500 to win but he ended up needing the 200 to lose by 40 bad luck Jock, & bloody well done Chris.
