I rang tarratts at 1.30 today to be told there were no tables available for competitions but was told to ring back at 4.30pm to speak to the man in charge.
Thankfully the man who knew what he was talking about said they could provide 4 tables. With the two in the club that leaves us 1 short.
So is anyone out there willing to loan a table to us. Tarratts are happy for us to use one of theirs in a pub but will need transport to move it.
So over to you guys, one table is all we need for a full set for the upcoming competitions

Thanks for the list Tommo
The first thing we need to know is if there is someone that can transport the table from a pub to the Roffey on Friday 27th and return it to the venue. It would be really helpfull if someone can confirm asap that they would be able to help.

The Norfolk Arms table is the nearest & plays well.
There is a Horsham Doubles competition booked on it Monday 02/03/09 but no League match on the Tuesday 03/03/09.
It might be possible to play the Doubles on the Norfolk table but in the Roffey Club & then return it for the next home match on the 11th
After the 14th/15th the team are away the following Tuesday. Phone number for Norfolk is 01403 750676. If you require number for Team Captain please PM me.
I can't do anything re transport but could help move table if needed. Ian.

Jean/Nigel,
If you get the permissions from the Norfolk, Tarratts might be persuaded to do the extra shift journey themselves as the Norfolk is only about half a mile away (it being their table, after all.) The matter will then be sorted for 28/2 - 1/3. But the Norfolk will probably want their table back a day later, two at the most.
So the extra logistics to be sorted: 1. Someone to transport the table back to the Norfolk; 2. A separate arrangement for the weekend 14th/15th March.

Only if Tarrats cant supply more than 4 tables they might have the time to get another ready by then !!

I don't think Tarratts would want to be involved in an extra journey, Ian, and I don't think the SCBBA will want to fork out the charge for an extra table if they can get away with this sort of arrangement.
Makes one wonder what faces us a year down the line: with seven teams in some of the competitions, what happens if Tarratts cut us down to three or even two tables ?

Makes one wonder what faces us a year down the line: with seven teams in some of the competitions, what happens if Tarratts cut us down to three or even two tables ? We will either need to hire the tables from the AEBBA....... or look to buy some tables ourselves. If competitions were held "out of season", then the tables that were owned could be hired out to pubs for the rest of the year on a profit share scheme. A number of tables are already owned privately in this area and are used in pubs on this type of scheme, so presumably it must be financially viable. ???

You've described what we'd be obliged to do if Tarratt withdrew completely from competition table hire.
And then there would be a tough decision to make as there would be a conflict of interests. (SCBBA owning a set of tables would mean hiring tables from AEBBA and collecting them from Reading would not be economically viable.)
All hypothetical at present, and thankfully so.

Okay, I've arranged the following for you...................
John Miller can provide the transport and is willing to perform the move of the table from the Norfolk Arms into the Roffey Club early evening on Friday 27th Feb.
He thinks he should be able to enlist the help of Dick Cable and Micky Fairs for the move. If anyone else is needed he will let us know.
All he asks is that the agreement with the Norfolk is made officially beforehand that he can take the table.
Also, Tarratts need to give their estimated time of arrival for the other four tables, as the club is closed on Fridays during the day, and someone will need to be there with a key to let them in. (John is going to give Tarratts a ring himself.)
John expresses concern about the Roffey Club table in the main bar being moved, hopefully the competition can proceed with it remaining in situ, players drawn to play on it moving through to the other bar. (To move it and have to re-set it up again afterwards could put a League title in jeopardy !)

I was surprised at Johnny Miller's concern as I don't recollect either of the home tables being moved before (or even adjusted ) when they have been used in recent years (even when football was on the TV) and I have heard no mention being made of doing it this year, and was only planning on setting up the 5 tables that will be brought into the club. I intend to go in Friday evening for a basic set-up then again early Saturday to finish the job.......anyone want to help ? Have spoken to Johnny and said I could see no reason to move the main bar table........anyone disagree?

I don't think anyone has registered any intention to move the main bar table, Sparky, John is just safeguarding against anyone being over-zealous.
And it's not as if we haven't had a competition split between the two bars before, it always used to work okay when the competition was held at the Downview.
With a bit of luck John and his team will repeat the favour for the second weekend (14th/15th) and we shall owe him a debt of gratitude. 8-)

Thats all very good. Sparky if you are involved could you keep Roise Beckwith informed as team Captain she should be the first to be consulted along with the Norfolk that the table will be moved.

Thanks for sorting this out everyone, it all seems in hand. The table in the other bar will not need to be moved if that is John's preference, and so it will mean there is one less table to set up.
Any volunteers for setting them up on the Friday????

Ok. Just to confirm I have spoken to the Norfolk Arms & the Team Captain. they are fine with the table being moved. I have assured them with his blessing Sparky will go in on Tuesday 3rd March to re levell the table back in the pub as we are playing a Team cup match that night at Roffey Club.
We have moved the Doubles match booked for the 2nd March to another venue
This arrangement has ONLY been made for this weekends competitions.
We may be able to do it again for the 14th / 15th but it would be better if Tarrats could supply the tables as at the moment it is a busy time with postponed matches & teams that play in 2 leagues & League competitions taking place. If not it will involve moving a table 4 times & mean time spent in setting up.

Thanks for the info iang. It is very doubtful tarratts will offer us another table for the comps in 2 weeks after the first weekend. I would like to use the Norfolk again if possible. I understand it doubles the work. However I will look into alternatives.

For your interest we will have 7 tables for this weekend
4 'new slate' tables from Tarrats (Yummy). 1 table borrowed from the Norfolk Arms (thanks to the home team, the Pub, Tarrats and Johnny Miller). 2 existing Roffey tables to be used (in situ).
Thanks are due again to Johnny Miller who has been instrumental in making things happen for the Roffey Club and therefore for all of us. I have thanked him publicly at Horsham events but think others should now know that he has always made his efforts quietly in the background and not many know just how much he puts into supporting his Team/Club/and County.
Thanks are due to Tarrat's who are continuing to support our game, despite the tough trading conditions.
When you are playing at the Roffey Club (those that do) please remember the effort and time given freely by Nigel, Jean, Johnny, Clive, Ian and others who make it all happen.
I wish good luck and enjoyment to you all.
