Last night at the Witney Summer Finals, a ball mounted the cushion and dropped back into play. A discussion ensued and I was surprised to hear fairly experienced players (naming no names Mark and Ian! ;D) saying that it was not a foul shot and wondered if this was a common misconception. Rule 27E of the AEBBA rules definitively and unambiguously states;
27. Foul shots incurring loss of break score penalty. E). Any ball mounting the cushion or leaving the table, even if it falls back on the playing surface. The ball should be returned to the rack. It is not a foul shot if a ball bounces upwards and returns to playing surface without touching anything apart from another ball etc. etc.
So if the ball merely jumps over a pocket or similar then it is not a foul shot, if it mounts the cushion then it is a foul shot, even if it falls back in play.
cheers Tony
