I met the seller of this table last night for a few games at the Cornish Inn
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/bar-billiards-table-/251193070211
A shame this one, would have been ideal for Q - but for the fact that the slate (obviously no good) has been replaced with an MDF base. Must reduce the value dramatically.
No timer either, that handle must just be for show. :-/
Went for just £135-30 after 9 bids.
I now have the full story, and will be very interested in other peoples comments.
The reason this table was missing slate, timer & bar is because the seller had removed them!! he bought the table for its dimensions and to use as a pattern, he has now made his own table (a long held dream of his) and is looking to put them into production, he is a (retired) cabinet maker with (his words) "an interest in making/inventing things"
The slate/timer/bar from the table he sold is now in his first production table, he doesn't like the bakelite pockets so has turned his own from brass (and very nice they look too - from the photos) his next project is to build the timers, copying the original from his stock, he is tooling up to produce these as we speak.
He found a local company who would produce the slate beds for him (at a stupid price.. over £1k per slate) but has now sourced them from (if my memory serves me right) Italy, he doesn't intend making a coin mech, happy enough to produce free play tables.
His tables are/will be made from solid oak and once again from the photos look amazing, I intend visiting him in the near future to have a closer look and a couple of games.
He has used local cloth but is interested in sourcing the higher quality baize that we use.
He seemed very knowledgable of the game (background in Pompey many years ago, but not league) but whilst he knew and could recognise the different manufactors he didn't seem to know about narrow/standard width differences, I mentioned that the thrupenny bit leg Jelkes is the most sought after and he came back with the fact that he can reproduce them, or spares for the originals without a problem.
My only worries are:
1. Does he have a GENUINE interest in the game or is he trying to make money
2. Can he really do what he says or is he full of bullsh!t
If he is as talented as he sounds he could be a VERY useful person to have on here (I suggested the forum, if he joins I will immediately remove this thread)
I will try to get photos of his creation and post them here.
THOUGHTS OF MEMBERS PLEASE?
As a footnote both Dave and his mate Andy are useful players, knowing most of the shots & angles and have obviously played for a while.
