MID SUSSEX BAR BILLIARD LEAGUE DRAW FOR TEAM KNOCK-OUT CUP Eight Bells V HHUSC @ St Francis Hurst A V Plough @ Eight Bells Watermill Phoenix and St francis both have byes Forgive me for saying this... but what a strange way to do a competition. ::) Surely you should give the "byes" in the first round of a competition.... not in the quarter-finals!! :o 12 teama in the League.... 4 get "byes" in the first round and have the chance to still play in the Plate if they lose their first match,,,, that way you get a full line-up of 8 teams for the quarter-finals. ;)

Until this year, there have been 16 teams in MSBBL for many years so obviously all of the teams have to go into the first round.... :P If you look at any AEBBA or Open Competition you have the byes in the first round, not in the quarter or semi-finals.... and surely that makes more sense?? ::) But, obviously you can run your own competitions however you like.... it was only meant as a helpful suggestion as I thought that a mistake must have been made. :-X [edit - tidied up quotes to make the meaning clearer - Sav]

I see what your saying Dave but I don't agree with byes in first round if not needed I feel you should decide who is in main and who is in plate from the start. Then if a team does get a bye due to having less teams then that's the way it happens but I appreciate your comments and thoughts
Many thanks
Boball

12 teams in the League.... 4 get "byes" in the first round and have the chance to still play in the Plate if they lose their first match,,,, that way you get a full line-up of 8 teams for the quarter-finals. ;) With respect Dave, I don't think that your 'alternative method' is an improvement on the format as decided, for the simple reason that the first round of Plate would be deferred whilst the eventual line-up was resolved - causing an extra set night for play which couldn't be a Wednesday. The best way when handling a lineup of twelve would be to have four groups of three playing a round-robin, with the four group winners being the semi-finalists - exactly like Lorraine did for the 2012 Premier Div Masters. But then there would be arguments on how to proceed from there - - should the four runners-up only contest the Plate ?
- should there then be 4 left in the Main and 8 left to contest the Plate ?
- should all the group winners and runners-up still contest the Main (wnr of Grp 1 v r-u of Grp 2, etc) and just the 4 bottom teams go to the Plate semi-final ?
Quite honestly the fairest way in the circumstances seems to be to involve everyone in the first round, as Bob says. That way teams are divided into two pools of equal size, and I can remember this principle being argued, hammered out and established at committee in years gone by. Besides, this method is the ONLY one that fits the League's programme without creating an extra round and causing the inconvenience of an extra night's play.

I could reply to a lot of these points..... but, as I have said before, I only posted here to start with as I thought that a mistake had been made and clearly any League have the right to run their own competitions in any way that they wish to. So, good luck to all of the teams that are playing.... and those that have the byes! ;D

I echo Dave in saying good luck to all teams in the competition.
