Thanks for posting Joe (we're planning tomorrow for next league, be great if you're able to get a team together. just give me a shout). In more exciting news we now have a second table in the Fulford Arms who are propose quick fire tournaments taking place on one day. We're also welcoming a new team from the Knavesmire who christened their table with a singles tournament last friday night, a tremendous evening even if a player from the 'ball won. We've also been in touch with some guys from sheffield who hope to head up later in the year for a billiards crawl AND hopefully we'll have news of another team from the uni *cough*joe*cough* shortly so things are really moving in the north! The players are there, it's the venue we need. The Victoria are looking at putting a table in, but the cost is putting them off for the time being. I suspect that they'd need to know that a team is definitely there if they want it, but for the time being, we could play away matches only as I suggested previously, or take up temporary residence at the Fulford Arms (not sure how happy they'd be with that). I'll be bringing two new people to Thursday's game, so things are looking good from the uni!

Tommo - That trophy is a bit misleading, it gets dragged out for any photo op in that pub. come to think of it i'm not sure what they won it for in the first place. Joe - fantastic, i've already spoken to chris at the fulford and he's for you to play 'home' games there for the time being. drop me a message to let me know if i should go ahead and include you guys in the fixtures we're going to schedule tonight.

A couple of students have replied saying that they'll be staying in York over the summer, so this may get off the ground quicker than I thought!

By way of an update, we now have the dates set for the next staging of the league - now expanded to five teams - and have posted a few pics from our five team/two table event last week. you can see the dates and match report on www.yorkbarbilliards.com

Yeah, we'd definitely be up for that. We're having a north vs south Yorkshire tournament (York vs Sheffield) this weekend, so if that goes well maybe next time all the Yorkshire teams could join forces to play teams from the south of England, either up here or down there. We would probably get completely demolished but it'd be fun!

Yeah, we had a chat about that re.league rules. The photo was taken before they got the cloth marked up, it's now set up as a 3-pin. It's a very handsome table.
More news on additional league members should be available soon - we've collectively bought the table from the Shoulder of Mutton in Slaithwaite, and will hopefully have it installed in a York pub within the next couple of weeks.

Thanks to everyone who helped to make this happen - especially Ben, Geraint, Tom, Jan, and Chris. Might need to move that dartboard!

We've bought another table today, from a private seller in Redcar. Hoping to possibly squeeze in an eighth league team in time for the start of the winter season. A couple of pubs currently showing interest, but time is tight! Will post again as soon as anything gets sorted so that the map can be updated.

Another new recruit to the York league! The Woolpack Inn on Fawcett St has just installed a table. Here's a pic:
This takes us up to 7 venues in York. Still hoping to get Chris from the Fulford Arms to part with at least one of his three tables (!) in the not-too-distant future, so that another pub can get involved.

This takes us up to 7 venues in York. Presumably the Grapes are not yet league members as such, and the Gillygate haven't yet got their table....otherwise I make it nine !

Hi Tommo, yeah the Grapes is a bit too far out of town to take part in regular league matches, so their status is sort of non-affiliated friends at the moment. Last time I was there the landlord was talking about possibly getting rid of the table as no-one ever uses it, which is a bit of a shame. Maybe they should link up with the Crown & Cushion in Welburn and start a Howardian Hills league!
The Gillygate still haven't got a table in, but we're working on it...

A tiny crumb of information which may (or may not !) be of interest, is that bar billiards was played in Yorks as far back as 1938 - according to this press clipping I have found:

Hi folks, just dropping by to let you know that the York league is now back up and running after a 2-year hiatus. And I'm glad to say that we've gone back up to 7 teams this season, after dipping down to 5 last season. I'm especially pleased that we've managed to get a new university team together. Here's the up-to-date website: yorkbarbilliards.altervista.org/ So to summarise all the recent York table/affiliation changes, there are now league tables in the Ackhorne, the Crescent, the Golden Ball, the Phoenix, and the Waggon & Horses. And there's a non-league table in Walmgate Ale House. There's no longer a table in the Knavesmire or the Fulford Arms. So we've got fewer league venues but more teams this season, with some teams sharing a venue. Finally, we're wondering whether the AEBBA is still interested in holding a challenge cup for non-ranking players in York, as originally planned back in 2020. We'd be very glad to help organise it if so. We've got in the region of 50 league players in York alone, so I reckon we could drum up a good crowd. Most reliable way to contact us about it is via yorkbarbilliards@gmail.com. Cheers, Michael

Cheers, Michael Glad to see you have got your league up and running again Michael There was a challenger competition for players ranked outside the top 250 back in 2019 and i know Lorin planned to run an event in 2020. He is no longer secretary of the AEBBA but I would be willing to help as I run the All England event now going forward. If there was a wish to hold a similar competition we would need to sort out a few things like venue, how many tables were needed and where we would get them from, also a date to be held. The aebba 2022 dates are on the attached link so you can assume the AEBBA tables would not be available at those times, also the tables are stored in the north for the second half of the year so that is probably the best time to hold an event like this, if you are going for York as the venue aebba.co.uk/aebba-calendar-2022/You can email me on nigelsenior05@googlemail.com if you want to discuss further.

Hi Michael, Thanks for the updates on your venues: I will update changes on the main list, and notify Sav for action on the Map. Just a couple of queries, first, though: 1. Presumably the base for the York Brewery team is still the Ackhorne ? 2. What is the venue for the University team ? You have stated there is no longer a table in their previous venue the Fulford Arms, and unlikely they have a table on campus. Cheers, tommo

Thanks guys - Nigel, I'll drop you an email about the challenger event to discuss it further.
Tommo, that's right - York Brewery are still based at the Ackhorne, which now also has its own team. The university team are based at the Waggon & Horses, which also has it's own separate team.

Quick update on all things York-related: With the current season hitting the halfway mark the Ackhorne are the team to beat: yorkbarbilliards.altervista.org/ It's been brilliant to get playing again after all this time, and it feels like there's a real buzz around the York league again. Speaking of which, the table that used to be in the Fulford Arms is going to be installed in Castle Snooker Club this week: castlesnooker.com/ Hopefully the club will get a team together to join the league next season. And we've now agreed a date and venue for the UK-wide challenger cup for players ranked outside the top 250, to follow up the 2019 competition. It'll be on Saturday 20th August, at the Crescent Club in York. Curt and Nigel will be kindly helping us out with the organisation - providing the tables and helping with the set-up and running of the event. We're already recruiting entrants, and hoping to use the proboards to keep a log of entrant names. If someone could advise me on the best place to set up a new thread about this I'll happily get this sorted. It would be great if you guys could also spread the word about the competition further afield. Anyone interested in registering can email us at yorkbarbilliards@gmail.com to sign up. Cheers, Michael
