3. Greek citizen-soldiers, usually armed with a spear and shield. They normally fought in Phalanx formation. (A square formation of soldiers who advanced on the enemy) 14. Armour made up of overlapping metal plates fastened with leather straps. (A bit like an armadillo!) 15. A stick with a sea sponge on it. (Thank heavens we don't still do that, given the state of the lavvies at the Dun!) 18. As light cavalry, their berber horses were small and fast. 23. Armoured heavy cavalry. Both the rider and the horse were armoured with scale armour, usually armed with a lance. Originated in Persia and influenced the later European Knights.

13 king tarquin and the other etruscan kings 19 improvised weaponry, a stone or various other blunt objects would be sling 22 a crest on ones helmet 24 rectangular 21 a sign in latin? 13 top answer, 2pts 19 stones okay for 1pt 22 half point only. The real distinction of rank was the swagger stick, then called a vitis, worn by a centurion and used to direct military drill and manoeuvres, or to administer physical punishment. It was a short vine wood staff, hence the name, about the size of a cane. 24 correct, 1pt (a curved rectangle) 21 technically worth a half point for literalism. There is a better answer, though.
