The answer is an autonomous region, further south in those days than the country bordering Algeria that now bears its name. ;) |

Morocco has more of a Spanish influence rather than French. West - and south - as per this earlier clue ! Yes, Mali is spot on for the last point......... It's quite a surprising one, as there doesn't seem to be that much there - only Timbuktu maybe.
