The Danegeld was paid by Ethelred the Unready. Eventually he went on the offensive and ordered the murder of every Dane in England (the St Brices Day Massacre 13 Nov 1002). This prompted further hard-hitting Danish attacks resulting eventually in a successful invasion by Svein Forkbeard (1013).Leader: Dunplaying 10pts

France, becoming the first ruler of the Kingdon of Jerusalem but refused to call himself king 5 Answer worth 1.5pts.....he became Pope Alexander VI. 8 correct, 1pt 9 sorry, incorrect - he would have already known of countries to the east of India : China, for instance. He would have expected to hit them first when travelling west. 14 correct, 1.5pts 22 top answer, but marking you down 0.5 as he was not king of France - that was Phillippe I. He was a Frankish knight, duke of Lower Alsace, and as you say came to rule Jerusalem, but without the title of king. His successor, Baldwin I, did however take the title ! 9. India 20. The Tower of London 9 I marked BigPhil incorrect on that one, and I stand by it! Columbus may well have made India his targeted destination, but, drawing on the the writings of Alfraganus, had calculated the circumference of the Earth as 25,255 kilometers at most, and the distance from the Canary Islands to Japan as 3,000 Italian miles (3,700 km, or 2,300 statute miles). (Whereas the true circumference of the Earth is about 40,000 km (25,000 sm), a figure established by Eratosthenes in the 2nd century BC, and the distance from the Canary Islands to Japan 19,600 km (12,200 sm)). He had thus thought that the Far East was scrolled nearer and had provisioned his supplies accordingly. However, it was accepted at the time that Japan was a lot further away from China than it actually is, and when he eventually hit land early (the Bahamas), he assumed he had arrived there. So the answer is Japan (Cippangu on this graphic.) 20 yes, good for one point. Leaderboard: 1 Dunplaying 10pts 2 BigPhilMac 5.5pts 3 DaveJones 1pt
