Oxfords Steven Sheard has won the Alternative Rules for the second time after beating Tony Webster from Hants in the final on aggregate. Steven scored heavily all day with one score of 4k which is a rarity for this format of the game, he also made lots of breaks over 1k including one of 1,700 which earned him the highest break prize. In the Semi's Steven beat his Oxford team mate Mark Trafford 2-0 and Tony beat yours truly on agg by a small 20 The plate final was won by Oxfords Dave Tooke 2-0 against ? (sorry I've forgotten his name but I think he's from Kent ?) We had to phone Dave up to tell him we were going to be late because we couldn't find a route out of Oxford due to the half marathon and all the road closures! Keith

An interesting competition in a version of the game that really makes the fancied players work for their wins! and produces close finishes!
One point that concerned me is that this is virtually an open now with almost fifty people playing. The AEBBA rule book binds me to buying trophies for winners and runners-up alone (plus high break) for this competition. Entry fee is only £3 on the door plus raffle takings. After hall expenses, raffle prizes and wear and tear on the tables there is little for prizes as the Reading competitions must pay for themselves and should make a profit towards the future (they did not last year as some days made a loss).
So few trophies for four or five people does not seem much of a reward for all that turned up, but more trophies would have to be paid for!
Sav.

I forgot to say well done Steven. Also the R/Up in the plate was Doug Carswell from Bucks who knocked out Curt Driver in the Semis. PS A small moan about the triangles, one or two of them still need to be sanded down so they fit over the balls properly!

I would also like to say that I still can't understand why there has to be two legs in the plate from the 1st Rd (especially for this comp) as this is needlesly extending the day. There were about SIX other people (other than the finalist's) in the room when the finals were being played which is a disgrace. It's certainly not helping the situation of people taking the tables down and tidying up at the end of the day, if no one is there to help! We were also running later than stated, so maybe it's time to start earlier (like Opens do, at 10.30) and make the draw before the day. Ah that's better!!!!! Keith

Keith Keith, this is unlike you to have a moan! Surely the day couldnt have finished that late, the finals were due to start around 5.30pm. So it must have finished before 7pm, even allowing for delays/raffle? This is far earlier than the opens finish which usually go on past 8pm. Yes opens start at 10.30, but they do not require everyone to be in attendance for the draw, expecting everyone there at that early start time is going to affect the numbers. We have tried to do the draw the before the day before and it was a bit of a disaster with a lot of no shows which made the day very long with lots of tables not being used because of byes etc. I came up yesterday by train (no other Sussex players in attendance) - the earliest I can get to Reading is 11.20. A 10.30 start in opens tends to be for the locals who can get there early (ie I would have no problem having a 10.30 start time for the Sussex Open but would think it a little harsh if I had one for the Bucks). We have had 2 legs for the plate for most of the Alternative Rules I can remember and when there are 42 players it should be ok. It is a case of you are damned if you do and damned if you dont. Some players will be annoyed going in the plate playing best of one given there is that small an entry, some players would prefer best of one all the way through to the semis. You cant please all the people all the time. Congrats to Steven, he is now racking up the wins this year
