It is with great disappointment that I have to announce that the home game against Jersey that was being held over the Bournemouth weekend has been cancelled. I received an email on behalf of the Jersey Committee to apologise to AEBBA for not being able to fulfil this fixture.
There are always reasons why players can't take part from time to time so we have to respect the decision made and hope that it is just a one off.
Im sure over the coming weeks the organisers of the weekend will get thier heads together and try and come up with an alternative match for the England team that has already been selected and confirmed. If anyone has any sensible ideas to put forward then I would suggest we use this thread for it.

Perhaps it would be an opportunity to play the "friendly" match that was suggested by Bobhall on the original selection thread? Have Jersey given any indication if they would be able to fulfill the fixture on an alternative date? Perhaps they would be able to play the match on either the weekend of the Surrey Open or the Sussex Open as both of those are held fairly near to Gatwick Airport and there are a number of hotels around the area that they could stay in that are reasonably priced?

Quite like the idea of an England v Young England match played off the spot as all internationals are.
Good chance for the young guns to see what it's like to play in an England match and show if they should be considered in the big picture.

I have asked the question about the possibility of playing later on in the year. I have been told that this will be spoken about at the next Jersey committee meeting (early Feb) Curt

Sav Great Idea, and there has been some great performances from us youngsters this year! Time permitting could you not try and fit two friendly's in, an England B and then an England Youth (maybe instead of the doubles) because i'm sure the England Selectors have a headache selecting the team and long list of players who are knocking on the door of the England Team.

This is on the front of the Jersey Website.....
(quote) No International match in 2014 due to lack of positive responses from Jersey players. Apologies to England.
Is this the beginning of the end..... (end quote)

Some good ideas coming forward.
I do like the idea of England v England youth . Not sure if you will be able to fit two matches in as I believe there is a disco on the sat evening to consider as well.
As we are in a position to play around with this a bit then why don't we have England v England youth/ ladies.
Our top ladies don't have an international at the mo so I think it would be a shame not to include them as well ?
Just an idea ?

Not sure playing this in Bournemouth is a good idea if your playing against England B/England Youth, unless you are only going to pick a team from the players who have entered Bournemouth.

Hi Jean I do see your point but there is still 2 weeks until entries have to be in for Bournemouth . It would only take a few phone calls to see if people are interested and you never know it may generate more pairs as well ?

Is this the beginning of the end..... (end quote) That sounds similar to the problems we had with the England Team last year.... .... but we have more resources than Jersey and still managed to send a team - and get a great victory! Guernsey have also had several of their top players missing for the internationals that are held in England in the past.... all things considered, it doesn't bode well for the future, perhaps the time has come to consider making changes to the formats and where and how often these are played to try to encourage the players that are selected for all 3 of the international teams? The possibility of a triangular competition has been mentioned in the past.... perhaps if that were to be held on alternate years in either Jersey or Guernsey it might make it easier for them to get teams out to play in it and if it was run alongside another competition (as Guernsey do with their Open) then it could help to encourage the England players to go over as well as it would mean more games for everybody? It would be a shame to lose the internationals forever....

I hope that this latest news does not include the Jersey v Guernsey 'International'. A longstanding fixture that pre-dates by many years, any matches held versus England Bar Billiards teams. Due to be held in Jersey this year.

Don't really see a problem in any players going on the tables prior to matches on Sunday, as long as we keep to 'off the spot' and hey let's be real, we are trying to promote our game.
Curt has an excellent idea re England youth and lady players. No not biased, as I will not be playing!!!

Could the next international match be played against a Channel Islands team including Jersey and Guernsey as one team, I know they do not get on that well but in the circumstances this could be a good option.
