Well done on starting the poll, Phil. Although you could have given us more choices than four. Spain had the cockiness knocked out of them last night and Holland must be considered contenders - along with my choice Uruguay. England will know more about our chances after tonight. That van Persie goal last night was sublime.

So, the first phase of the eliminators concludes and we've seen all the teams in action by now. Brazil were disappointing in their second game (v Mexico) and Argentina looked no great shakes either. The Germans always provide a threat and looked awesome in their opener. England are drinking in the last chance saloon, lose v Uruguay tomorrow and it's an early flight home.
Man of the tournament so far must be Arjen Robben, he's just scored a brilliant goal v Australia, only for Tim Cahill to equalise with an equally brilliant goal sixty seconds later. Game on !

I did indeed!!
It goes to show how having a player like Suarez sets you apart. A magnificent showing from him, imagine him at full fitness!!
He was the only difference in the teams.

Why do England only start playing once they fall behind ? Once Lallana came on as sub, we had better shape and Rooney's goal followed soon after. Then for a ten minute period we seemed to be in the ascendancy - before Suarez hit us on the break. Frustrating to finish up with nothing after two reasonable performances, but since when was football ever fair ?

Really exciting second half Germany v Ghana, 2-2 with a quarter of an hour to go after a goalless first half.

The least said about England's limp performances in the World Cup the better, but a Wimbledon supporters' banner was spotted in the crowd, entitled "we are the Resurrection".......this is a reference to the recent announcement that a move back to Plough Lane in a new stadium (eventually seating 20,000) is on the cards for 2018. www.redevelopingploughlane.co.uk/our_proposalsFrom a depressing season in which I only attended two games, I am even considering a season ticket for 2014/15: we've made some fantastic signings recently, including striker Matt Tubbs from AFC Bournemouth who chose us over a return to Crawley Town.......will have to dig out that curly wig, jester's hat and vuvuzuela again!

I hope this world cup is remembered for 36 year old Miroslav Klose's front flip and Xherdan Shaqiri's awesome hat trick rather than Suarez mistaking Chiellini for canalloni.

I too hope that it's not remembered for the wrong reason: a collusion between the USA and Germany. Both need just one point tonight to go through.
This would be an echo of West Germany v Austria in 1982:
If this does happen it will blight the memory of seeing Klinsmann score four goals for Tottenham against us at Selhurst Park - he would really go down in my estimation !

Seems to be going that way!

Well, more controversy in this game, Hulk goal ruled out for handball, not a lot in it i dont think!! Chile reprieved! Just gonna throw it out there, with English officials, imagine if it was Argentina involved %

Three quality teams through now to the quarter-finals......expecting Costa Rica to join them. One would hope so, seeing as they beat two of the big boys and shipped a solitary goal from the spot!

Hmm not so sure now..........second penalty shootout in two days !
Do Costa Rica have anything left ? Their 10-man team gave it their all.
YES !!!! Great pens and heroic goalkeeping performance. Holland next, he'll need to be at his best again to keep out Van Persie, Robben etc.

Germany v Algeria was a crowd pleaser, Algeria along with Costa Rica the surprise packages of the tournament. Very comfortable on the ball.

Well this game is dreadful. Which one ? Argentina v Switz was so boring that I couldn't stomach extra time an switched over to the tennis - in time to see World No.1 Nadal get mullered by an unseeded Australian teenager........Pleased with my choice, but Mr Mike said that all the action came in the last couple of minutes with a goal at one end followed by a near miss at the other.

Apparently it was a Guernseyman, ship owner and buisnessman William le Lacheur who introduced football to Costa Rica.

Great credit to Costa Rica after holding the Dutch to Nil-nil after 120 minutes........in the lap of the gods now.
Holland win by boldly subbing the keeper just before the end, he saves 2 pens and the Dutch score all their four.

And to think I said that Holland v Spain was a freak once-a-decade result, this one was once a century!!
Tonights predictions, the Liberal Cyclists to beat the Junta 2-1, Huntelaar and Martins Indi (I'm feeling a centre half for tonight) for De Oranje, Messi for Argie Bargie.

5 (five) - 0 to Germany over Brazil after thirty mins, unbelievable! Interesting comment from TV pundit Fabio Cannavaro (former W/Cup winner with Italy): to save further embarrassment to the hosts they would not have gone on to 7-1 like the Germans (too cruel). Word would have gone out to shut up shop at 4-0.
