Hi Everybody The annual BHBBL AGM was held at the Railway on Friday 30th July, and there was a record turnout. I have attached the minutes below The main points of the AGM are: The league fees have increased by £5.00 to £35.00 per season We have introduced a “Player Short” rule, please see below Sam Short and Dave Sands have replaced Keith and Terri Newman on the Committee PLAYER SHORT RULE To give a fifth player a chance to arrive the first four games are to be played normally. If after the first four games have been played and a team is still a player short, the opposing captain draws one of the four players to play a second time. The result of this game will count for the team result, the fifth player’s individual record, but not the player’s individual record that is playing for the second time. This rule can only be used a maximum of six times a season, and once a player has played the extra game, he cannot be drawn as the extra player until the other players have taken their turn If it is a league match, and it is the away player that is a player short, that player does not have the break, giving it to the home player. After the opening break the rest of the game is played normally. If it is the home team that is a player short, the game is played normally. If it is a Team Cup match, the opposing player has the opening break, but there is no even break. If both teams are a “Player Short” then that game is declared a draw Best Wishes JT BHBBL MINUTES OF 2014 AGM (DRAFT).doc (36.5 KB)

THE FOUR PLAYER RULE Ok you've invited feedback prior to discussion at the AGM so here are my personal thoughts on the matter (which do not necessarily represent those of the Mill team).
I have an acquaintance with the proposed amendment from past association with Redhill, and can offer three examples of it in operation, one of benefit and two detrimental. 1. The incidence of benefit was when our team lost our kingpin at the half-way stage when Alec Hastings emigrated to Spain. We had already been functioning with a bare five including Margo, and in normal circumstances would have been obliged to fold, but the existence of the 4-player rule swung it in favour of carrying on – which we were relieved to be able to do for the rest of the season. 2. This worked well until Margo was unlucky enough to be the one drawn to play twice, and had two lots of 15k put past her on the same night, first by Simon Tinto and then by Geoff Jukes: Fun for them no doubt but not very amusing for Margo. 3. The other 'evidence against' emanates from some casual discussion with a lady player who was a reserve for one of the top three teams. Their main rivals were enjoying a good run of success using just four players with a 'superstar' getting a double helping of games each week and she reckoned her team had dropped hints to her that she should make herself unavailable a few times so that they could do the same. Not exactly encouraging for ‘rookie’ players and to me I think the rule does more harm than good, as it can be seen to penalise a team which are making the effort to make their numbers up with inexperienced players.
Nonetheless, I have added your news bulletin to the BBBL website in order for it to gain the required exposure.
When it comes to the AGM I shall not be opposing anything that has been put forward as a joint recommendation from the Committee. I would however question the motives for the proposal and can only conclude that it comes as an attempt to counteract the ridiculous number of postponements there were during the season just past….. You expect one or two in a season, but twelve (!) means there was one every other week, with only four teams (Roffey, The Mill, Dun Horse and the White Hart) managing to play every match on time: Were genuine reasons given for all these ? - as the mere mention seemed to touch a nerve with certain people, and quite often "it was so-and-so's birthday" was the excuse offered ! The catch-up week on the programme worked quite well, but it does seem to encourage postponements and time will tell if the introduction of a 4-player rule makes any difference. I would therefore only support it if were to be coupled with a clearer definition of the extenuating circumstances justifying a postponement (eg adverse weather conditions; two or more regular players on holiday and no reserves available; problem with the home venue and the tie irreversible etc etc).
