HI
I joined the forum because i was wondering if any old photos were on here. regarding the following
In January 1979, John Stevens of the Ampthill Hotel, Freemantle, created a new world for a break in bar billiards. Stevens sank a staggering 24,350 points while playing a Southampton League match against Portswood Hotel. it shattered the old record
He is my uncle and i was wondering if any people from the time remember him i have a tonne of old pics from the time
regards
Paul

Hi
Neither Mr Chris or I remember him although we were both playing then.
We will ask Reg Mannell and Tony Woolvin

What is the current world record for a break in a single leg? I was just going through the records of the Northants Open and found a break by Keith Sheard of 26,400 which I don't remember ever seeing higher than that!

I think Mark Sawyer of Wokingham had a couple bigger Stephen.... Yeah I think I remember my dad mentioning Mark Sawyer holding the current record, could be wrong though Yes, Mark Sawyer made a break of exactly 29,000 in the Oxfordshire Open, v Sean Lee (?) I believe. I also have an idea that, bizarrely, he did not win the high break prize on the day, because he went on to win the tournament and the rules prohibited one player receiving both prizes. Can anyone else confirm my recollection?

In the Wokingham league; "Mark Sawyer sets a World Record for a single break at the White Horse, Wokingham, after the league match that night. A first attempt yielded ‘only’ 29,850, but on the next attempt he scored 31,850. He was clocked at 8200 on 5 minutes and 16,000 in 10 minutes. The bar was timed at 18 mins 48 secs."
In April 1999 "Mark Sawyer wins the 7th Oxon Open, beating KT 23k – 22k in the Final. Throughout the day he had seven scores of 20k plus, and set up a record break for Ranking events of 29000 in his Quarter-final second leg (to follow 24760 in the first leg), a record which which remains unbeaten to this day. Semifinalists were Leon Beer and Bob Toye. Plate winner was Keith Sheard, who had earlier scored a 26000 break of his own, with Gary Johnson runner-up."
Both facts above are courtesy of old BBQs and Tommo's excellent Timelines drawn from various sources.
It was against Sean Lee of Oxford and the Final was won by Mark Sawyer against KT by 23700-22070. Mark had seven scores over 20K on the day, out of 14 games played for an average of 16690!
