Why is it you have 26 entries in the Sussex off the spot, played in groups and double leg games, but the BIOC has less entries by 5 played in groups and only single leg games? This would not happen in a MEN's competition, so why do us ladies have to put up with it. Lorraine, The biggest tournament of the lot, the World Championships, is also played in groups with single legs. I know it's to give players more games but I for one think it's better to have a straight K.O & Plate but that's just my opinion. Keith

Keith Hi Lorraine, The simple answers to the above questions are as follows:- 1) It is easier to devise a format for 8 groups when you have 26 players than it is with only 21 players. The sex of the players involved was NOT a factor in the format. 2) You need to have at least 3 players to make it a "group", if you have an odd number of groups (I have looked at formats for 5 and 6 groups) then you leave yourself with the problem of how to make up the quarter-finals of the Main and Plate Competitions when you would have groups of uneven sizes. I suppose that 7 Groups would be a possibility although it would mean someone else doing the format as I simply do not have time to do it now. 3) The Sussex Off the Spot is scheduled to start earlier than the BIOC Ladies and, being a Saturday, there are perhaps not the same time constraints for an earlier finish that you have on a Sunday when everyone has to get up for work the next day. When I first started to look at the formats, I discussed various options with members of the AEBBA and Sussex Committees.... the general impression I got was that most players (male and female) prefer to play more games and that groups would therefore be a good idea in preference to a straight K.O. Competition. If that is not the case with the Ladies that are playing in the BIOC on Sunday, then I am happy for them to choose any of the following 3 alternatives.... 1) The proposed format shown above of 4 groups of either 5 or 6 players with single legs.... double leg games in this format would mean that the competition would end at 10pm. 2) The alternative format (shown in post below) for 6 groups of either 3 or 4 players with double legs in all games. 3) A straight knock-out with Plate Competition, double legs in all games. This would need to have a new draw carried out on the day as some players have been slotted into gaps in both formats due to withdrawals and new players entering the competition. I have formats for all 3 of those options so it would be easy to make a decision on the day.

I am going to put my 'two pennies' worth in even though I am not playing .... I applaud Dave for sorting the event, for me he is a star: taking the event on and giving of his own time promoting the event to attract a very good turn out for this year constantly having to re-do formats and schedules to ensure byes are minimal, at late notice too willing to be there at the start and end to put up/dismantle tables organising and getting trophies sorted for the event I would leave it as you had it Dave - just taking note for the future and maybe discussion at the AGM, via any proposal put forward in advance, or where all those that attend, can have their say. You have done more than enough for us all

Once again someone takes on thankless task and gives their time and dedication and they are not going to please all the people all the time, I do not want to be involved in the discussion on what format as I am one that goes along to the events I enter to try my best and also support the event and whoever is running it and always appreciate those who put in their time and effort to make things happen.
Whatever format is used can I just ask people to go along and get behind the event and support the organisers, this can be by helping set up the tables, clearing away or just volunteering to score during the day.
My apologies to Dave for not being available to help set up the tables today, circumstances dictate I am not available, but be assured I will be doing all I can to support and help tomorrow, once again I have prior commitments on Sunday.
Glory be to the unsung heroes who go out of their way to ensure everything happens, as Chrissie says turn up at the AGMS and voice your opinions. Please do not think that I am having a go at anyone personally but I sympathise with those who give their time up.

Since there have been some changes to the original entry list that was put into the draw, I would suggest that a fresh draw should be done if the straight knock-out format is chosen as the preferred type of competition. I will have all 3 formats on my computer on Sunday and will ask the Ladies that are present which type of competition they would prefer to play, based on some of the responses that I have received from some people (here and by email/text etc) I am sure that there will be some differences of opinion so I will simply go with the majority.... as the old saying goes, you can please some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time etc etc.... My thanks to those who will be helping to set up the tables and who have assisted with formats etc, much appreciated.

With another player having withdrawn from the competition, we now have 20 entries for this competition. When the Ladies have arrived, I will ask them which of the following options they would prefer to play... 1) 5 groups of 4 players, double legs in all games with main and plate quarter-finals to follow the group games. This would use the existing draw for groups that was carried out recently. 2) A straight knock-out competition with Plate for players that lose their first match, all matches would be double legs. A fresh draw would be done "live" at the event as the players that have entered late would not be in their correct positions based on entry for this type of format. Since this competition is for the Ladies, I believe it should be their choice of which format (a majority of them) would like to play.

Congratulations to Jean Brackenridge on her victory at the Hurst Club today, beating Denise Wills in a good final. With a majority of the ladies voting in favour of a Group Format, Jean emerged unbeaten from a very tough Group A while Denise had also gone unbeaten in an equally tough Group E, the other Group winners were Sandra Hall, Mel Standbridge and Jenny Florey with Bella Stoner, Sue Oakley and Lorraine Hall also progressing to the Main Quarter-Finals as the best 3 group runners-up. The losing semi-finalists were Jenny Florey and Sandra Hall. Anita Blackman won the Plate Competition beating Pauline Withey by just 180 points in a nail-biting finish, the losing Plate Semi-Finalists were Ros Appleby and Genette Nicholss with Michelle Baden, Karen Bacchus and Jan Bithell the losing quarter-finalists. There were a number of very good breaks on the day and, interestingly, the top 6 breaks of the day were made by different players with Jean hitting the best with 7,610 in one of her group games. As always, there are many people to thank for their help..... Dave Alder for delivering and collecting the tables. Ian Lelliott, Jean Brackenridge and Kevin Hall for helping to set them up. Colin Robbins for the usual excellent catering.... the curry was excellent. Matthew Knight, Kevin Hall and others for running the raffle.... and the players who bought the tickets meaning AEBBA raised £101 on the day. The Hurst Club for hosting the event and making us feel so welcome. All of the people that stayed behind after the event to help take down the tables and load everything into the van. Results shown below, I hope that everybody enjoyed the day.

It seems that after all Dave achieved beyond the odds in managing to keep all the Ladies happy in running a good competition to their chosen format. This is after all a National event and Dave deserves full credit from the AEBBA for running it this year in Sussex on their behalf. Well done to Jean on her triumph and commiserations to Denise, and similar to Anita and Pauline in the Plate. Another thumbs up goes to Dave for getting the full transcript on here so quickly and efficiently.

A couple more thank-you's that I should have included in my previous post.... To Colleen Park for getting the raffle prizes.... and to the many ladies that also kindly donated raffle prizes on the day. I think that we had a lovely selection of prizes on the day which perhaps explains why the raffle was so successful. Thank you all.

well done to Jean, commiserations to Denise and for the plate to Anita and likewise commiserations Pauline. To Dave for taking on the running of this and his team of helpers.
Dave does a great job in running the competitions he does and I will be very sorry to see him drop out of helping with future competitions, he is the backbone of the Sussex singles and Doubles running smoothly, I am ok getting the entries and doing the running about but his administration skills are what makes everything gel on the day.
