Very chuffed to win the Grand Prix for the first time. I will take it as a compliment that most people thought I had won this one before, but I think this is the 11th time I have qualified in a row, lost a final chasing KT’s 23k about 4 years ago but got over the line this time. I am not sure if I am the first person to win after losing their first match – I certainly rode my luck at times yesterday. In that first match had a great game against Gerry but lost out after forgetting he had scored 320 in the 2nd leg – I don’t normally miscalculate – school boy error! If there is a lesson there I think it is you should always keep trying even if there is only a small chance of winning – I nearly gave up in my second match yesterday but you just never know with this game…..the other lesson might be to check the score before you hit the last shot…..
Well done to Martin Cole on making his first big final, he looked comfortable chasing the 17k I had set and had over 4 minutes left when he missed 4k behind. He pushed me all the way and It also could have been very different had he got the balls back first game after my early miss – as I say I rode my luck at times. There is no doubt though Martin’s first big win is round the corner.
Well done to Jenny on what I believe is her first major ladies win – long overdue! – hard luck Jean.
And BigPhil on winning the 25s – no doubt he and some of the other under25s should be appearing in the Grand Prix in the future.
And the oldies – well done to Geoff Pitt in the 50s and Dennis Atkins in the 60s (who had two great battles with Ian Lelliott)
It was a long day and me and Dave A will get our heads together to see if a better calendar can be sorted. Problem is you separate the 50s and 60s you lose numbers, put them both on one day in the summer you lose numbers. But when it is on the same day as the Grand Prix and Ladies Grand Prix it is a real headache – and it could have gone on longer if Ian Lelliott had kept winnng! The positive though is that 29 + 22 entries (and also 8 for the under 25s) holds up very well against previous years.
