There's such a fine line between success and failure: When Crouchy took that fine goal to make it 2-2 the whole pub erupted. If it had stayed that way, we would have got the point needed and acclaimed him as England's hero. But our defence let us down, and we don't even make it to Euro '08 to once more lose in the quarter-finals. ::)
Well, one person's done alright for himself out of it, McClaren can keep smiling all the way to the bank. >:(

England losing out on Euro 2008 has its advantages - Pompey wont be losing players to internationals - other than the majority of the team playing in The Africans Cup 2008. The solution for England is not to bar foreigners, it is to develop better Englishmen

IMHO it will not matter who England get as the next manager, we will never get anywhere or win anything as we are just an average team with average players with Delusions of Granduer. What about Greece winning Euro 2004...... ??????

Throwing Scott Carson in at the deep end like that was a big mistake David James would have been the better choice but why does he (McClaren) continue to overlook Rob Green? Defence:- Sol Campbell & Wayne Bridge don't have the pace they used to, Richards is ok but Lescott no way, he is not the right choice at this level, midfield:- can't say anything that hasn't already been said, Forwards:- Crouch there is not another striker in the country that could have taken that goal as well as he did, should definatly be a regular alongside Roony or Owen. Campbell & Bridge are not good enough at this level as you say. Their lack of pace got showed up all the time. Lescott is a great defender but had to cover for Campbell too much. Midfield - No heart in it. What we need is people like Stuart Pearce, Terry Butcher, Paul Ince. Those players are the ones who have disappeared and need replacing.

Interesting Mark you mention Pearcey, below is Stuart Pearce's early career, following hijm failing early trials. Would he have had the opportunity to bubble up nowadays after his first failure?? I have my doubts Sav ================================== He failed a trial at Queens Park Rangers and then rejected an offer from Hull City, instead settling happily into a career in the non-league game with his local side, Wealdstone, a top Middlesex club, while training and working as an electrician and plumber. For almost five years, he was the first choice full back of a highly successful team, then amongst the biggest names of non-league football. and in 1983 Wealdstone received an unexpected offer of £30,000 (then a huge sum for a semi-professional player) for Pearce from then top-flight club Coventry City. Manager Bobby Gould had been to watch Wealdstone, and was hugely impressed by Pearce's determination and combative attitude. Pearce agreed to the step up in clubs reluctantly - making his professional debut for Coventry immediately.

Who knows what gems are waiting to be unearthed in Non-League.
He moved on from our club last year, but how about this little guy in the number 7 shirt (Robert Ursell) who used to delight us each week with his Stanley Matthews-style dribbling ?
Agreed, we also need a) another Pearcey with a powerful left hoof, and b) someone in the Paul Ince/David Batty mould to win the ball in midfield with a tigerish tackle.

Sorry Millhouse i have to disagree Lescott is just not good enough at international level weather he's alongside Campbell, Terry, Ferdinand or whoever else, don't get me wrong Lescott is coping admiralably with the premiership but this level is a step too far.

I would like to believe that this isn’t an actual record of a conversation between Vulnerables and McLown……………….but then again!”
Mc - Right, Tel, thanks to Israel I can still get us through to the Euros and can't afford any mistakes. Goalkeeper - who's the best in the country? TV - Rob Green Mc - Don't know him. Is he in the squad? TV - No. Mc - Who have we got - I can't afford to play that clown Robinson again? TV - James and Carson. Mc - Who would you go for? TV - Well James is in good form and has more experience. Mc - Hmmmmm, James cost Sven a few games, I'll go with Carson. Defence picks itself; Nev, JT, Rio and Ash. TV - They're all injured, Steve. Mc - Oh. Well, Micah at right back, Ledley and Carra in the middle and the other fella who can only kick with one foot on the left. TV - Ledley's injured, Steve - and Carra refuses to play for his country. Mc - Who does that leave me? TV - Lescott and Sol. Mc - There must be other centre halves? TV - They're all foreigners, Steve. Mc - Lescott? I thought he was a left back, never mind, he's in. Midfield is easy Becks, Lamps, Stevie G and Joe. TV - I wouldn't start with Becks, Steve. Not fit and playing in a Mickey Mouse league. Mc - Well I saw him a few weeks ago and he scored twice in a 14-4 win. TV - Save him towards the end in case we need a get out of jail card like against Greece. Mc - Good idea - so we'll play the little fella on the right. You know, quick with no end product. TV - Lennon? Mc - No, the other one. He's Dad will be in the TV studio, so that should go down well. So that's SWP, Lamps, Stevie G and Joe. TV - Steve, you know Frank and Stevie G can't play together, even my old mum knows that. Mc - Only because neither one is defensive. I'm going to put another man behind them, Barry. That'll fool Bilic. Now, up front. I think we should play the two that caused Russia so many problems here. TV - Heskey and Owen? Mc - Yep. TV - They're both injured. Mc - $hit - who would you play? TV - Rooney and Ashton. Mc - Excellent, two class players, they're in. TV - They're both injured. Mc - Fck me, have I upset the big man up there? TV - Who, Barwick? Mc -No THE big man. TV - Crouchy won't let you down. Mc - How many goals has he scored this season? TV - None Mc - None? Is he the best we've got? TV - We've got Defoe and Bent as well. They've got one goal between them. Mc - One goal between 3 of our best players, why is that? TV - Too many foreigners in the Premiership. Mc - Tel, I'm struggling here, do you think I'm out of my depth? TV - Don't be silly, look at your CV, how many trophies have you won? Mc - None. TV - I've just remembered, I've got to speak to my solicitor about redundancy compensation.
