I have been asked by the Redhill league to post this message.
As of the 22/04/16 there are only 14 pairs entered for this competition.
UNLESS WE GET ANOTHER 10 PAIRS TO ENTER BY NEXT WEDNESDAY THE 27th, THIS COMPETITION WILL HAVE TO BE CANCELLED.

This competition ran with 16 pairs last year, and had around 20 pairs the couple of years before.........but it has been years since we had as many as 24. So with all due respect you may get another couple of pairs but I can't see you getting another 10 by Wednesday, although there are only a few Surrey entries so maybe someone could gee them uo. It just seems a shame there are nearly 30 players willing to take part in an national event and it could still be cancelled.

How has this gone so wrong ? Up until now the AEBBA have always staged this, along with their other competitons, at Reading and later at Didcot.
A check of the AEBBA's 2015 AGM minutes reveals that the move to Surrey was officially sanctioned, yet no member from Surrey was present at the AGM: Was a tender to take on the competition submitted to the meeting ?
Taken at face value, a great idea, especially as Surrey have a profusion of good lady players: Redhill stage their own One-Day Mixed Doubles early each year and usually 32 pairs take part.
So one might be forgiven for expecting a swelling in the ranks for a National competition with dwindling support over the past few years when staged in Reading or Didcot.
But as Nigel has pointed out, we still have the "usual suspects" willing to take part from other counties, and it must be said a disappointing response from the new hosts.
This can only be down to a lack of publicity at a local level.
[EDIT - I note that the switch to Surrey did actually take place the year before, but it was still a bit low-key at 16 entrants and my comments above still apply.]

Could I ask for clarification as to why it would have to be cancelled re numbers of entries?
The tables are free for the day. Trophies should only be awarded to the value of entries Monies for Winners and Runners Up should not be given if funds are not there from entries and the possible raffle.
Is there a venue cost that needs to be taken into account for the day?
Many thanks Chris

To try and explain our decision. We originally agreed to host this event last year to keep it running. There were few other options available, I was led to believe. As anyone knows these events are put on for the benefit of the players and could only be done with the support and help of many. The lack of numbers cause several financial issues. The club, who kindly allow us to take over their function room in order to cater for more than 20-25 people all day. Colin who supplies the catering and would run at a loss with the numbers we currently have. Finally, the Redhill league, who supplemented the event last and would be expected to do so again this year (currently around £120 just from the Saurday). The comments relating to our own mixed pairs overlook the dwindling numbers we have. Last year was 24 pairs, but was well supplemented from those who regularly travel from other counties and help make our events. I don't know what the answer is to get others involved and feel disappointed to even consider the postponement as an option, but I don't feel any criticism is warranted. If you check the Surrey entries for national events you will see we have only a limited number who wish to take part. We will see what transpires over the next few days.

If we accept no food and bring our own if numbers are low? could we just make tea/coffee I would supply? The club will have over 25 if all Pairs attend? I am not criticising as you do a fab job Garry, just trying to make this a go ?

Hi Chrissie, thank you for the offer for the food/coffee/tea. I am pleased to say Colin is still doing his catering so food and hot drinks are available from him throughout the day. The tables being free was not something that I was aware of! But thanks again

As the mixed pairs is now going ahead would your financial backing be willing to sponsor the Sussex Open? It's hard nowadays to break even without sponsorship
