What's the 4 player rule Phil? Our teams are made up of five players and if you can only field four you forfeit that game.
Dawn :)

Dawn :) It's an awesome rule where if you're short by one player, any of the four can be drawn again to make up the 5th game. The stipulation though is that you can only use it so many times per player in a season. I thought it was a universal rule! %

I thought it was a universal rule! % That's the whole essence of the matter: it will work for some leagues but not so well for others. Leagues are diverse: some have as many as 14 teams, some as few as 4. And, breaking it down further, some teams have loads of players signed on that they can call on, whereas some struggle to field a team of 5. I took a dislike to the rule when we invoked it once in Redhill and Margo was drawn out of the hat to play twice: first Simon Tinto put 15k past her, and then she had to forfeit the break against Geoff Jukes - who promptly put another 15k past her ! Having said that, the rule seems to have worked quite well in Billingshurst since being introduced a season ago.

We introduced a 4 player rule in the Brighton League for the first time this season as an experiment as it was only way that some teams would stay alive at a time of diminishing players and losing venues. It has worked well this year and will probably continue next year. I do sometimes wonder how many teams (and players) have been lost over the years as a result of one person dropping out of a team and the rest of the team deciding to hang up their cues rather than struggling to keep the team going? I can think of a few teams in Sussex that may have kept going if there had been a 4 player rule in place at the time they dropped out.
