Probably a forlorn hope but does anyone know of the existence of any available Bar Billiard slates?
One of my league's match tables sustained further damage to an already cracked and braced slate on our recent finals night (no I don't know how it happened!)

Been trying to source slates without success, even made contact with slate companies in China!!
No one wants to supply 12mm slate, they consider it too fragile! Can get 19mm slate but it would make the tables awfully heavy!!
If anyone hears of any slates going I am still in the market, good prices paid.

I may at last have a possible source of standard slates.
I do not have a price yet or a minimum order quantity.
Is anyone interested?

Sav
Might be worth having a word with Tony Britten or Jim Thomson. They have been buying pool table slates and cutting them to size then drilling holes. They have made at least 1 possible 2 for our league and I know they have a few spares.
Thanks Stephen

Cheers Stephen,
I know Lorin was slate hunting. I don't want to go down the 19mm pool table route as it adds too much weight to the table, certainly no good for AEBBA and van max loads.

Slate possibility is now on!
I have to cost out the entire package including transport to the UK but I would guess it will be around £250 for a traditional 13mm slate and wood surround only better supported at the front.
The minimum order is 30 slates.
Without any commitment at this stage, whom would be interested to make this possible? as usual all quotes will be at cost price to me.
Ideal opportunity for any league to have a couple of spare slates ready to swap out for recovering, or to replace any of the very many cracked slates we play on.
I may have orders for close on 20 as it stands.
This is a one-off, I will not be retailing any slates after this order,

Pretty close, though your far end holes appear approx. 5mm further up than mine, think I'll check a couple more slates before confirming. Must query the size of your holes? slate.pdf (167.45 KB) slate-frame.pdf (203.96 KB)

Sorry about that , yes , the drawing was for for my benefit and i have drawn it with the rings in place . ( i will change it so as not to confuse) As you show bore size is 62mm . On the Jelks i have just done recently i unfortunately had to use the only rings available at the moment which are rather large on the internal dimension 54/55. The original rings (only 2 survived) were made of wood and the holes were nearer to 63/64 , so the Peridon ones fitted perfectly because they are supplied way over size ! How any one without a lathe gets them to fit is beyond me ' I also dont understand why they cant supply them the correct size instead of the size they supply , doesnt make sense !! I understand that Taffy has had some made ? I have now acquired a couple of used sets of rings so now ok for a while. Best Regards Alan

I'm trying to move this on again.
What I have not got is definite interest (without commitment) enough to get a firm quote at the present time. I'm guessing its going to be around £200,
I want ten, Nipper wants two. T.We. wants two T.Wi. wants two
Pot Black want up to ten.
Northants may want some.
AEBBA may want a couple.
Minimum order is thirty slates, I'm not there yet.

First definite quote has come through which is £165 plus VAT for 20 of just the drilled and finished slate and to be collected by me from Manchester.
Wood surround to be added or could use wood surround off damages slates.
That's more expensive than the indication on the other quote that has been very slow in coming back.
Will advise

How do you transport 20 slates safely ? Thats a big undertaking and a massive commitment.
What s the weight ? 1 trip or 2 ?
Very scary.
No wonder they want collection !
There will be breakages , there has to be ??
Good luck with that one Sav

Hi Alan
Early days yet but the tentative plan is;
Slates will arrive crated. I have a VW Transporter T32 with a payload of some 1300kgs. 20 by 13mm is only 260mm, slates plus the crate and packing should not present a size problem.
Each slate weighs 50kg so 20 is under my limit. They would be loaded via a forklift onto a prepared floor in the van. Offloading is a bigger problem, but that can be done one slate at a time. If the order is 30 then split it into two crates and I take an HD trailer.
Unknown at present is the wooden surround to be fitted over here if needed.
If a safe modus operandi cannot be put together then I won't be going ahead.

An update;
A month goes by and the contact in the business who originally offered the possibility of sourcing the drilled slates at around £100 each plus the cost of the wooden surround has been extremely difficult to get definitive answers out of. I will make one final attempt before giving up on him.
The alternate source that I have found directly is double the price for the drilled slates plus the cost of the wooden surrounds. I would need a minimum order of 20 through this source.
Any thoughts?

I've got a table with a broken slate so I'll take one please. Happy to pay upfront if it helps.
In terms of thoughts, I've wanted a slate for years. The cheaper option is obviously nice, but if it comes to the crunch....beggars can't be choosers.

The person who made the wooden frame with extra surports came out at about 50 pounds for one of Tunbridge Wells tables

Sounds a good price Bryan.
I have emailed the original contact yet again but am concerned about proceeding with him due to the extremely poor comms.
Will give it a few days and put some more flesh on the bones of the more expensive contact.

Ian Champion has sourced some very good pockets in the past and it might be worth checking if he can get some more

Sorry but I have not pursued the idea of slates any further. Medical problems make it unlikely I will be lugging slates around for the foreseeable future.
If anyone wants to continue the project they are welcome to use the drawings I did and I can supply contact details for the potential supplier. Problem there was he is in the Manchester area.
My league would certainly want some (starting figure minimum 5 dependent on price less than £2k).
