Final Scheduled league Fixtures - March 27th.
Alexandra 5 - 1 Dew Drop, Henty 5 - 1 BLEP, Locomotive 2 - 4 Sea View, Swan B 4 - 2 White Hart C, White Hart B 2 - 4 Swan A, White Hart D 3 - 3 White Hart A.
Going into the last week of fixtures, the championship title was still up for grabs. The Prince of Wales had completed their league season and held a 2 point lead and a 4 game “for” advantage over their rivals, the Swan B; who needed to win their remaining match by 5 games or more to clinch the title outright when they entertained the White Hart “C”. Lo and behold the Swan B did win but only by 4 games to 2 and as a consequence there was a tie at the top of the league, both teams finishing with an identical record. The odds on this situation occurring after 24 games can only be described as remarkable.
Therefore the LBBL rule 4 comes into play in order to decide the champions; meaning the overall aggregate scores throughout the season were taken into account and this showed in favour of the Swan B. Congratulations to Joe Oakley and his team in their first season in the LBBL. This was tough luck on Dave Ingram and his team from the Prince who made a gallant attempt to retain their title, in only their second season in the LBBL. Either way congratulations must go to both these teams for providing such an exciting and thrilling league season finale.
It would also be remiss not to praise Ken Williams and his White Hart “C” team in making a good fist of it last Tuesday night, indeed a comment which can also be applied to several teams over the last few weeks in their efforts to thwart this season’s two big guns.
This fitting tribute can really apply to all teams this season for demonstrating a competitive nature, sportsmanship, respect and upholding the integrity of the LBBL, with the overall standard of play having certainly improved during the last 2 seasons.
The Sea View won for the 5th. match in a row which sees them romping away with the B team championship and finishing in an overall league position of 4th. Congratulations to Steve Beach (Stan) and his team for finishing in such a high position; whether they retain their “B” team status next season remains to be seen.
