Well rooms all booked for Friday and saturday night, just hope its a better journey down this year, last year took me over 8 hours although I did go via Portsmouth, which cost me valuable drinking time on the friday night. Wonder how many times it'll be mentioned that I didnt quite make it back to the hotel room in the early hours of the Sunday morning, but was found by Colin asleep on the landing out side my room, I always get a dodgy room key that doesn't work

Rules of Play Hastings 4 Pin tournament
1. In all matches, the person drawn 1st shall have the 1st break of a double break single leg game, 1 team player will play 1 team player from all the other teams, all players (unless substitutes are played) will have 3 legs with the 1st break and 3 legs with the second break. 2. 4 Mushrooms (not pegs) should be placed in front of the 4 high scoring holes. There must be 7 White balls and 1 red ball in the tray after the timer jack is pulled. To start the game, place the red ball on the spot above the 'D' and play a white ball from the centre of the 'D'. This is called the break shot. The centre of the 'D' should be marked with a spot. Thereafter, with the exception of further break shots, and the last ball, either coloured ball may be played from any position within the confines of the 'D'. All strokes throughout the game must be played from the 'D'. 3. The player must not play the cue ball directly into a hole. The cue ball must first strike another ball to become a scoring shot. In normal play players can choose to use any ball from the tray. 4. When the red ball is sunk, the score of that ball is doubled. When 2 balls are sunk from the break shot position on 3 consecutive occasions into any pockets the scorer will call “One Up” if both balls then fall in any holes a foul is called and that break score is lost. 5. When all balls are in play, and none left in the tray, the ball nearest to the baulk line is returned and played from the 'D' to continue the game. If two or more balls are equidistant from the baulk line the ball nearest to the centre should be returned to continue play as it is "nearest to the D". 6. When no balls are left in play, the red and white balls are positioned as for the start of the game. 7. When a ball returns to cut the baulk line ( not the edge of the baize), that ball is removed to the tray. 8. If a mushroom is knocked over by a ball and cannot be replaced because of obstruction by a ball, that ball shall be removed to the tray. The peg must be replaced to its correct position immediately. 9. If a mushroom is knocked from its correct position without falling over, if possible it shall be immediately replaced on its spot, if a ball is obstructing the spot the mushroom will remain in its position until such time as that ball is moved from the spot then the mushroom should be immediately replaced correctly. If a break ends the mushroom will be respotted and the ball returned to the tray. 10. If a ball and peg are wedged in a hole together, the peg is to be removed first and the ball allowed to drop down the hole and not returned to the tray even after the gate has dropped. 11. Each player continues until a non-scoring shot is played. 12. Once a player leaves the table their break is deemed over, should a ball fall down a hole after they have left the table this will not count towards their break or their opponents break unless their opponent has first struck the cue ball whether or not it strikes another ball. 13. Scores shall have the same value before and after the gate has dropped. The red ball will continue to score double. 14. The last ball on the table shall be played from the centre of the 'D', into any hole off any cushion. If the last ball is correctly played, but not holed, the player keeps the score of that break. Foul Shots 1. The player looses his/her entire score if :- a. The last ball is holed without striking the side cushion. b. The player causes the peg covering the 200 hole to be knocked over. 2. The player loses the score of that break if :- 1. The cue ball fails to strike another ball. 2. Any ball returns to cut the baulk line (not the edge of the baize). (The 'D' counts as baulk). 3. The same break shot is played more than three times in succession. 4. The player causes any peg, other than that covering the '200' hole, to be knocked over. 5. The player fails to keep 1 ball up when instructed by the scorer 6. Any ball leaves the table, or strikes the backboard, even if that ball returns to the normal play area. 7. Any ball is played other than from the 'D'. 8. The player causes any ball to move other than a shot played correctly from the 'D'. 9. If a break shot or final ball is not played from the centre of the 'D'. 3. If a combination of foul shots occur, then, regardless of sequence of events, the player shall suffer the greater penalty.
Table Rules
The table shall be set out as follows:
• Mushrooms shall be placed (the baulk line side) to cover the 200 hole, the 100 hole, and the two 50 holes and shall be set 6mm from the edge of the hole + or – 1mm • The spot for the red ball for the break shall be exactly halfway between the rim of the 200 hole closest to the baulk line, and the back edge of the “D” +/- 20mm (this allows for tables with older cushions which may have uneven bounces) • The number of balls shall be seven white and one red. • The lower scoring holes should be marked with the 30 and 10 holes reversed in relation to the current AEBBA 3 pin rules

I dont want to start another war about the rules, but is rule 14 set in stone?
For four pin players around here the favorite finishing shot is playing the ball off two cushions, either top and side back into the 50 or side then top into the 200. We think four pin is all about bringing balls back into the holes but of course only being able to use the side cushion takes that away.

Fantastic day at the Hastings 4-pin team tournament today, and congratulations to my Worthing teammates Rick, Tony and Bob on our narrow victory (via a tiebreaker!).
Special thanks to the Jenny Lind for being amazing hosts and keeping us well fed and hydrated (the cherry cider went down very well), and to Colin and all of the other organisers/helpers for all their hard work staging the tournament.

Well done to Worthing winning a close tournament with 4 teams in the mix for the top spot which was decided in the last game of the night with Bob Hall (Worthing) facing Clive Minihane (Seven Sisters) with only 0.5 points in it, either team could take the trophy with Ashburnham already on 15. Bob was behind for most of the game but just managed a late comeback to win on the last ball leaving Worthing and Ashburnham on 15 and Worthing taking the title on count back Many thanks to Linda Challis (Jenny Lind) for sponsoring all the AEBBA tables and supplying lunch dinner and tea through the day Thanks to Alec, Sandy, Dave, Andy for heaving the tables around And Alec and sandy who did a great job leveling them on a tricky carpeted upstairs function room Well done to Bob Osborne (Ashburnham) the only player to win 6 of 6 A special mention to White Horse (Sudbury) for coming down to see us and the Jenny Lind teams entering their 1st ever 4 pin tournament and another special mention to Nigel Senior who took the trouble to format the event for 8 teams and then reformat for 7 at the last minute, in the end the 7 team format was way better. Am thinking of playing the same format next year as 28-30 people is probably a max for the size of the room |

Thanks Colin for organising such a great day which ran as perfectly as it possibly could of done. Also thanks to your guys who spent time levelling the tables, sorry I cant remember their names.,
As always I have to find something to complain about, as just about everyone knows I do have a habbit of losing my cue as I just put it down in a convenient place near the table ive just played on and this year it meant me walking what seemed like miles to retrieve it for my next game and resulted in me delaying the start of one game, not helped by a certain Mr Chris Haynes who came to find me and then spent ten minutes talking to me before he remembered the purpose of finding me was to tell me I was due to playing on table 5, so you know me, I rushed down stairs to table 5 at top-ish speed only to realise I had to go back up all them stairs to find my cue. Please can you get a lift installed before next year.
I have to give a mention to all my team mates for putting up with me and keeping me supplied with beer and also a fair ammount of other players for buying me drinks to. I believe Michelle O'Flynn should be singled out for proving why she is one of, if not the best female four pin player around. For some reason she also seemed to make a lot friends and done a great PR job for Suffolk and sudbury bar billiards.
Also thank you to Sav, current AEBBA four pin champ and former EA champion for playing along side us, it did take Michelle, Colin and myself a long time (at least 20 seconds) to bring sav down to our level and way of thinking that the bar in bar billiards is all about the bar that serves drinks.
Thank you again to everyone, we had a great time and were made to feel so welcome.
Dave

Very enjoyable day, I am torn as I do believe true 4 pin is on narrow tables and was played that way at Sudbury in the Open and certainly causes people to have to adopt to that version of the game. I am sure the top players will master the narrow tables but think that for a lot of players you are always in the game.
The 50/50 break is on when played on normal tables and is certainly skillful to learn and requires concentration to keep it going, quite like the idea of a one up shot on the wide tables, not waiting for the red perhaps another bonus in the Hastings rules. The day was well run, played in great spirit and good to meet up with some different players.
A massive thank you to the venue for hosting and making us so welcome. Great selection of real ales, a cherry cider that went down well with certain players.
My biggest thanks to Linda what a gesture to sponsor 4 tables and lay on a great spread of food, met this lovely lady for the first time Saturday and what a lovely lady.
Well done to Colin and his team for setting the tables up and putting on the day, like him thought there was just the right numbers of teams and will certainly if invited be back next year.
