Congratulations to all players selected, particularly new cap Chris Cox, and if not already done so the captains will be contacting you to confirm availability.
There is quite often lots of questions regarding the selection of these teams and why certain individuals are or are not included so I would like to take this opportunity to clarify the approach used for this year.
The selection was made by the seven members of the Sussex Committee. At the start of the meeting each person is given a sheet showing the stats from the previous season of a long list of players who are likely to be considered for selection (however each person is free to choice anyone not listed). Each committee member will then select the seven players they feel should form the A team; by whichever means they choice to do so. These are counted up and the seven players with the most votes are selected for the A team. If there is a tie for the final place/s on the team then a separate vote is held just including these players.
The committee are then asked to select seven players for the B team, from those that have not been picked for the A team. Again the players with the most votes will form the B team (the player with most votes also becomes first reserve for the A team and so on) and again a separate vote is held to decide any ties for position.
A final selection of seven players is then held from those not selected for the A or B team to form the reverse list for the B team.
The process for the Ladies is identical (but without the B team).
So that is the process but that will still lead to questions like “This isn’t the strongest team that could have been picked, why isn’t 'X' included?” and “On what criteria is the selection based on”. So let me try and answer some of these.
Various individuals have made themselves unavailable for selection as either they don’t want to play or can’t make the date of the County Championships, these known players were excluded when picking the teams. There is also the case of great players who now don’t play very often, and hence are lowly ranked; this is a tough decision of do you go with them or someone high up last year’s rankings and it is up to each selector to decide on a case by case basis.
This leads on to the criteria for selection. Each committee member will have their own method for picking players, so I can’t comment for them, but personally I look at the Rankings List for the last couple of years, win rate and averages in Sussex leagues, past performance for the Sussex team and performances and participation in National Events.
This year all of the A and B team (and the top three reserves) finished in the top 20 of the Sussex Ranking List last season, with the other 3 being unavailable. While this will not always be the case it shows an indication of what the committee look at.
Is this process perfect? Of course not but then no method will be. Everyone will always have a view, and that may be different to the current committee, but the seven members who selected, some for the first time, offer a broad range across the counties leagues and despite difficult decision all came to a similar conclusion on who to select, suggesting we can’t be far off.
