Northants 7-1 Sussex at Merton Hotel all weather pitch on Friday 9th November 2018
A dominant display by the Northants boys saw them victorious in the inaugural challenge match v Sussex in wet and windy conditions on Friday night at the World Championships. Superior physicality and footballing skill saw them to an easy win. There was plenty of banter between the two teams but the Sussex boys talked the talk but couldn't walk the walk when it mattered. Playing 10 minutes each way Sussex keeper Nigel Senior had to pick the ball out of the net 3 times in the first half with no reply from Sussex. The second half continued in similar vein (even with new keeper Trevor Tucker in goal). Jack Baden scored a consolation for the under par Sussex team. Manager Jim Millward might have to face the board of Heather Millward and Michelle Baden on his return to England to see if he will still be at the helm next year. Assistant Chris Oakley had plenty to say (not surprisingly) from the side lines but is an unlikely candidate for the job.
Well done Northants
Ref's ratings Northants
Simon Coleman - 7/10 - a dodgy knee did not prevent some excellent saves, his hands stinging from a better second half performance from Sussex
John (Mike) Tyson - 7/10 - physical, aggressive defender, very difficult to beat with a frightening stare
Damian Coates - 9/10 (mom) - quality defender, clear man of the match with excellent positioning skills and great interceptions
Stephen Coleman - 8/10 - plenty of chat but quality general in the midfield, organisational skills of the highest class, only negative point was receiving the only booking of the match
Steve (Thierry) Henry - 8/10 very physical, high quality forward, with excellent finishing skills
Ref's ratings Sussex
Nigel Senior - 6/10 - gout prevented full movement between the sticks, but the ref was surprised to see some quality saves
Martin Cole - 6/10 - powerful player but lacked the killer pass that his opponents had. Stick to West Sussex League fella
Jack Baden - 6/10 - too much mouth for the ref's liking. Talented, skillful player, but a little less chat could see him progress to Hassocks first team
Alfie Millward - 7/10 - talented player with some excellent touches, needs to bulk-up a little next year and grow a few inches to see his undoubted talent come into play more
Joe Oakley 5/10 - started strongly, but faded, a shot nearer the corner flag than the goal in the first half summed up his under par performance. Surprisingly not booked
Sub Trevor Tucker - 7/10 - some great saves in the second half when left totally exposed by a tiring defence
Ref Matthew Knight (Sussex) - 8/10 - firm but fair
