Have any of you played the french version of the game with no 200 hole? what was it like?
also, there seem to be many variants of the game over there. anyone know and can describe much about them?

Almost all the French tables (Billard Russe) are eight holes, exact narrow Sams config without the 200 hole, so basically just like you were trying to play on Saturday.
Yes there are a few other configs but they are very rare.

There's loads of variants mentioned under this thread, Taffy :
Also, there's pictures on the following webpage:
The only one that impressed me as a viable alternative was the Slovakian table with holes in a curved line at the back, but unfortunately Azuritko's YouTubes showing one being played have since been removed from the 'net.

Billard Russe tables are as rare as hen's teeth now as there has been no game infrastructure in place for donkeys years. Cannot say I've been to France anywhere near as often as I used to when duty frees and cheap diesel made it so worthwhile.
