The earliest start to the season in living memory.
Reigning champions Baulkliners held off a spirited challenge by Layabouts in the opening fixture.
Some players a bit rusty and others with more important things on their minds.
Baulkliners 3 - Layabouts 2
Barry Osborne 3050 Ben Wilding 0
Pete Sanders 5080 Ashley Harrison 2208
Rodney Smith 5590 N. Wilkinson 1000
Barry Osborne (4 player rule) 1670 Paul Dyer 11670
Trevor Gallienne 0 Mat Ogier 13000.
Superb win and score by Didi only to be beaten out of sight by Mat Ogier with an amazing play out of 13000 against Trevor.

Layabouts 1 Hampshire Lodge 4
A bad night for the home team who all seemed to struggle with the new cloth. Only one score over 5K by Gary Naftel who did not seem phased by it. Same for both teams so no excuses. We just have to get used to it.
Ash Harrison 1160 Darren Pipet 1710 Debut win for a new player to the game. Good to see a team bringing in new faces. Pip kept his cool and deserved the point. Mat. Ogier 610 Ian Champion 3380 - Champ lost his opening break and Oggy had a chance to take control. But did not go well. Scrappy game. Champ grateful. Norman Wilkinson 0 Gary Naftel 7300 - I never got the break back and black pegged my total score when the game was already lost. Deserved win for Gary. Paul Dyer 700 Paul Le Gallez 1950 - Diddi lost his unbeaten record also tonight and struggled to put together and keep some decent breaks like the rest of us. Ben Wilding 2810 Shaun Broughton 760. Ben saved the whitewash. Shaun arriving late due to working late decorating the streets of St Peter Port. (Xmas lights)

Layabouts 3 Baulkliners 2 . Played 15/10/19 Interesting evening with lots of discussion about why the table is not producing the scores it did last season.
Ben Wilding 2960 Andy Rundle 2150; Ben took a while to settle. Andy white pegged several times which didn't help his cause. Good start for home team.
M. Ogier 3230 P. Sanders 610; Both players struggled at first. Pete lost his unbeaten record to a determined Mat who settled in the last 5 minutes of match.
Ashley Harrison 2310 Barry Osbourne 3370; Ash's rally came a little late, Barry relieved to have started a comeback for the reigning champions.
Norman 770 Trevor Gallienne 8810; Trev pegged his first break and I thought I may be in with a chance. But no chance as he mastered the table eventually.
Paul Dyer 4360 Rod Smith 1510; Didi sealed the win for the home team by digging deep and plugging away at the break, although not as quick as usual.

Giants 3 Layabouts 2 - Re-arranged match played on 4th November. Giants continued their winning form, although not by 5-0 as on the three previous occasions. Giants top of the league. Mat Ogier still top ranked on individual wins and score bonus this season.
Tom Oliver 1690 Norman Wilkinson 1370 - A scrappy game neither of us were proud of. Tom avenged my defeat of him same time last season on this table.
Roy Le Page 980 Mat Ogier 1510 Roy saving himself for Jersey obviously. Mat struggled with break as all the away team seemed to do, but did enough to secure the win.
Luke Oliver 8750 Bob Chapple 1830. Confident performance & win by Luke. Bob drafted in as last minute reserve dusted off his cue not used since Sussex Open.
Terry Kenny 6550 Ben Wilding 390 - Kane showing heis on form and raring to go in Jerseyland. Ben having no luck and a black peg mid. game gave him little time to recover.
Bob Le Moignan 1370 Ash Harrison 2290. Bob went into the game with 3 wins out of 3 and the game was a little closer than the score suggests. Ash needing a win after a few close defeats recently.

Layabouts 1 Giants 4 - Played 12/11/19 at Ex Service Club. 9 out of the 10 players present were suffering from a heavy weekend at The Merton in Jersey (allegedly), and some also affected by jet lag or not got over the rough boat journey back. Either that or blaming the slow low-scoring table, no one manged to score over 5000 points. Giants made the most of what they could on the night securing a useful 4 points.
Ash Harrison 1950 Terry Kenny 2460 - New cue in hand instead of the microphone Ash led for a considerable while until Kane got the break back and put in a decisive score. Norman Wilkinson 0 Roy Le Page 4710 - Roy putting in the best score of the night, lots of pegs and no ideas from his opponent. Ben Wilding 590 Luke Oliver 1820 - Luke's winning form continued despite the low total score, a win is still a win. Paul Dyer 2030 Tom Oliver 2460 - Didi could not blame the weekend in Jersey and nearly caught Tom's efforts when he eventually had his chances. Mat Ogier 2250 Bob Le Moignan 650. Oggy, our best player this season by far also struggled at times with the table's slow pace, but still tops the individual stats in the league.

Hampshire 2 Layabouts 3 21st November 2019.
Match played with heaps of banter and barracking by the usual suspects from the home team.... Result went to the final game when our in form 'Oggy' put in an impressive break which eclipsed most final combined scores of other matches on the night.
Champ 2710 Ash 2080 - An upset looked on the cards at the half way point until Ash pegged a break and let Champ back in to regain the break. Paul Le G 1780 Stormin 2340 - A much needed win by me and was pleased to bring the match back level 1-1 on the night. Darren (Pip) Pipet 1630 Ben (Bin Laden) Wilding 720 - An ever improving first season playing by Pip showing he is no easy pushover, however to be fair, Ben lost a couple of match winning breaks. John Sexton 900 Diddi Dyer 4960 - Another blast from the past drafted in as last minute reserve as he was playing skittles in the pub. John previously played at the one time Bastion of Guernsey Bar Billiards - L'uberge Divette, which once boasted four teams in two divisions. John was not phased and remembered how to hold the cue, although there was only ever going to be one winner. Now on to the decider at 2-2. Gary Naftel 350 Mat (Oggy) Ogier 7710 - Oggy was determined to keep top of the individual stats and passed the test with flying colours, balls dropping with ease and the thousands accumulating quickly. Even talk of Jose M possibly being appointed new Spurs manager did not put him off.

10th December 2019 Rangers 2 - Layabouts 3. Played on a neutral table (West Legion) Some stunning results on this table as usual with four players recording their highest scores of the season, one being Ash Harrison with a PB of 7400. Layabouts won the choice of breaks * and chose one, three and five.
Darren Ogier 0 (BP) Paul Dyer* 12,310. Not used to playing first, Didi settled down early giving Darren no chance to catch up. Didi's highest score of the season to date. Matt Wilcox* 5800 Ben Wilding 830. Without a win this season, Matt's confidence eventually returned and several breaks contributed to a decent total score. Geoff Ogier 370 Ashley Harrison* 7400. Ash has been noticely improving his performance all season and tonight produced a cool and confident frame, keeping his opening break and going on to record an impressive personal best total score of 7400 against the former Island champion. Leon Ogier* 480 Mat Ogier 9050. Leon was up against the top ranked player in the league to date. Oggy made no mistakes, coolly recording his 9th singles win in 10. Steve Carre 4000 Norman Wilkinson* 880. A clipped white peg during my opening break gave Steve the advantage and time enough which he took willingly and confidently to record his highest score of the season, 4000.

Could Guernsey be the first place in the world to restart competitive bar billiards.
As we move into phase 5 on the 20th June (Phase 5 means open as normal within the Baliwick) the League campaign could start as soon as the 23rd June.
I wonder if Sky Sports will cover the game?

95% of the players I have spoken to locally are keen to get playing again. We are so close to finishing the season and we could still play the Islands singles and pairs finals, and have a proper finals night as planned.

Could Guernsey be the first place in the world to re start competitive bar billiards ? Yes it was. Played at Hampshire Lodge Champ's team played old rivals Breakaways. A match with the usual banter and laughs. League Bar Billiards has returned to Guernsey I had to leave before the end so hoping Darren Ogier will be able to fill in with some detail.

It will be great if the border between Guernsey and Jersey opens up this year, and an alternative date for the inter insular can be found. These players have earned the right to represent their island.

Looking forward to our FINALS NIGHT, to be held at Hampshire Lodge Tuesday 28th July. What was an early start on September 11th has now transformed into the latest end of season ever, but we got there thanks to our wonderful States Emergency committee. Only one of the Island Singles semi-finalists has ever won it previously - Mat Ogier. Can Ian Champion, Luke Oliver or Roy Le Page put a new name on the trophy ? In 24 hours time we will know the answer. Good luck to all taking part.

Not forgetting the Guernsey pairs final. Two evenly matched pairs and four potentially high scoring players. Mat Ogier and Paul Dyer take on Terry Kenny and Roy Le Page. Could go down to the wire and would not like to predict who the winners will be.

The 2019/2020 Guernsey Bar Billiards Association's Final's night was held as planned at Hampshire Lodge. A difficult season in many ways, given the current situation and with mixed feelings, as one team was unable to complete their fixtures. However the committee decision was to play out the remaining matches as some teams had just two or three matches left before the local Lockdown was enforced, due to the pandemic. All Pubs and Clubs are now open and indoor matches are being played throughout the Island. First match of the evening saw two of the top Island players pitched against each other. Ian Champion due to play Mat Ogier in the first of the singles semi finals. Champ has previously been in many semi-finals and finals, but never won the Islands singles winners trophy. Champ had beaten Trevor Gallienne and last seasons champion Tom Oliver on his way to the semi final. His opponent had won it previously. Ian broke first and scored 4590 against a good reply from Mat with a total of 3730. Mat then broke in the second and took command, emerging victorious with 8340 against 6720 from Champ. The second semi final saw veteran Roy Le page making a surprise first appearance in the singles final stages against a much younger and less experienced teammate in Luke Oliver. Roy broke off first and led at the half way stage by only 300 points. Luke showed good composure in his break and confidently forged ahead, emerging victorious with a 7950 to 5650 points win. On to the pairs final next. Paul Dyer and Mat Ogier went into a 2-0 lead, needing only to win the third game with their opening break. This third game saw big mistakes from all four players and the pivotal moment saw Mat failed to keep a big break which would have secured the leg and the overall match. Kenny and Le Page then rallied and took the final leg to emerge winners on aggregate scores. Afrer a short break Mat Ogier was back on the table for the singles final against Luke Oliver. Mat broke off first and left Luke a mountain to climb with a 7960 to 560 points difference after the first leg. Luke to break secondly, started off slowly and confidently enough, and is capable of matching that score. But he was unable to hit form and let Mat back on to record his second ever Island Singles Champion win with a 10740 to 4430 victory over Luke, who will be back to fight another day no doubt.

Does anyone know if there are any Bar Billiards tables or teams in the Isle of Man ? Guernsey now has regular flights between the two Islands with no restrictions. Could be the start of a new Inter Insular (Played over three legs of course !) LOL

Hi Norman,
As you know I marshal on the island every year for the full two weeks and stay longer which does include the occasional pub visit!
I have never seen or heard of a table on 'the island'. A lot of research has gone into that!

Hi Chris thanks for the hands on report. Perhaps that would be a good place to start offloading some of those surplus tables ? Cheers Norman.
