As the Northants lads have contributed so much to this forum, I thought I'd do a quiz with them in mind. Unfortunately they may be at a disadvantage as these pictures are not in the orientation that the average Northants lad will be viewing his sheep. ;D One point for the type and one point for where its from. My decision is final, no barrack room sheep lawyers!!! 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 What's special about the next one? 8 9 10 11 Bonus points to be had here And for local interest, we have blow up rubber dolls, in Northants they have bar mitzvah ceremony in Northants Full mating plumage in Northants He says sheepishly ;D ;D Bahhhhhhhh

This is very difficult, Sav.
A nifty bit of googling didn't seem to help much, but rather interestingly threw up this picture which is known as TUPPING.
I think number 4 is a group of Australian Merinos, which of course prefer the missionary position, and number 10 is the Totnes breed.
Oh, and I think I recognise the Colemanator in picture 11. ;D Over now to those with more expert knowledge !

Number 5 is a Bighorn Ram, to be found in the plains of North America, or in British Columbia/the Canadian Rockies.

Are my answers to 4) and 10) wrong then ? I could be more specific if you like and say the Tasmanian Merino.
I might have known Sparky would recognise Dolly - probably from that previous excursion to Northants. ;D

Your right Tommo as I did get a brief sighting of Dolly however my view was obscured by some local lads who were crowding round the poor thing and appeared to be shaking it's hands but I couldn't be sure as I was pushed aside by more locals who kept saying ....."is it my turn yet?"

Hmm ! That's got me flummoxed - Dartmoor's north west of Totnes, and only really the white-face and grey-face and the Totnes live there. And the occasional visitor, such as Sheep-sHank Maaah-vin:

interestingly threw up this picture which is known as TUPPING. Well, the censor got to work on the rather rude picture, but to give you some idea, this is what Wikipedia says about Tupping : "Colloquially, Tup refers to the male role, especially if illicit. The term is used to effect in William Shakespeare's Othello, in which Iago taunts Brabantio, Desdemona's father, by shouting to him that: Even now, now, very now, an old black ram is tupping your white ewe.(Act I, scene 1)" Retrieved from "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tup"

Right, tommo's brushed up on (not up against) his subject and can offer the following:
No.1 Either a St Kilda or a Gute Ram (Swedish) - they are closely related.
No.2 At first I thought a Hebridean, but now I think it's a Max Loghtan.
No.3 A Castlemilk Moorit.
No.6 Scottish Blackfaces.
No.8 Teeswater
No.9 Soay (very similar though to the American Blackbelly)
No.10 is the Hebridean (north-west of Totnes !)
Surprised we haven't heard from Chris Tupper. Too busy Tupping, I suppose. ;)
For some bonus point information, it is not bandied about too often - but there is a Sheep Street in Northampton, Kettering and also in Wellingborough ! ;D

Chroist, I'm getting serious worried about you Clive, trawling the internet for sheep!!!
I'm imressed though.
Bear with me as some of my answers could be a bit whooly!!
1) Wrong, though it is one of your other answers 2) 2) and 10) might be difering incarnations of the same sheep, Max??? 1pt (at least) for Loghtan 3) Nope 6) Spot on 2 pts 8 Nope, though I thought this one of the easier ones 9) Nope, wrong (sub) continent 10) See 2), I'll check this out
Bonus point to Clive for the extra sheep info.
Point for Lolly for being so Ram-pant Point for HVP, but please be careful about mentioning Lambs, no under age stuff here
I'll tally the points later, gotta go play the silly game now,

Well I should sleep well tonight after all this counting of sheep. It's difficult enough sorting the sheep from the goats, but Sav's got me separating sheep from the sheep. >:(
In my quest for the correct answer to no.1, perhaps that one is the Castlemilk Moorit - or maybe the Hebridean ? (They're all beginning to look the same to me).
And perhaps number 8 if not a Teeswater is the close relation of a Wensleydale.
Some more useful/useless information: A 'TWINTER 'is a sheep approaching her second birthday; a 'THRINTER' her third. Some twinters are 'BRATTED' or 'CLOUTED', whereby a piece of clout or a brat is sewn over their bottoms :o as a form of contraception. A brat is local dialect for a stout apron made of coarse, heavy-duty cloth (clout). This brat would remain in place from mid-November until February. These sheep would then lamb as thrinters.

Sorry Sav, Taken a while for me to get my act together. 2 and 10 are the Manx Loghtan, native to the Isle of Man. Number 11 is a rare specimen, a crossbreed known as the Loghtan Cole-Manxater ;D

2) was actually termed as a 'Four Horn' and 10) as a Loghtan but I think they are the same, I'll defer to the Northants boys for expert knowledge.
11) Yes that's close enough, though I'm sure the Northants boys can fill in much more detail on where it is to be found, its mating habits etc.
Tommo 2 more pts

This is proving to be a bit of a baaaaaah-stead to solve.
No.1 I'm now convinced is a variety of Hebridean sheep, possibly the Soay from an island in the inner Hebrides)
No 9 I have taken a lead from your clue, and would say is either a Tibetan or Kashmiri breed from the sub-continent of India.
As for number 8, the answer came to me whilst I was musing over the fact that it looked rather like a llama. Of course, it's an Alpaca, which technically isn't a sheep but is more correctly classed as an ungulate. Native to Bolivia, Peru and northern Chile. Whew !
