Not about the band, nor about the tube station they were named after !
In the middle Ages, when few people could read, it was of little use to write the names on the images and paintings of Saints in churches. Yet people needed to be able to recognise the saints when they saw them; there might be a farmer who wanted St Cornelius to keep the pest from his cattle, or a woman asking good St Bride to help her sick child. Margo often calls on good St Anthony to help her find things ! Thus, each saint carried a special emblem for recognition purposes. This can be an instrument of their martyrdom, or some other object connected with their lives or special devotions; there are craftsman saints and also patron saints and many are connected with animals.
So for part one of this quiz, can you name the emblem associated with the following Saints ? Some have more than one, so 0.5pts for each emblem correctly named. Likewise for any place or object with which they are associated as a patron saint.
1.St Matthew 2.St Mark 3.St Luke 4.St John the Evangelist 5.St John the Baptist 6.St Anselm 7.St Anthony 8.St Catherine 9.St Christopher 10.St Clare 11.St David 12.St Dorothy 13.St Edward (the Confessor) 14.St George 15.St Michael 16.St Nicholas 17.St Sebastian 18.St Zita 19.St Giles 20.St Jerome
Good luck !

3) St Luke is often seen with either a book or more commonly a brush because he was a painter. He is patron of Artists, book binders and brewers!! Also glassworkers. And - unmarried men!!. Places: Hermersdorf, Germany.
4) St John (my favourite gospel also my confirmation saint) is mostly seen with a chalice and serpent. Now in my confirmation classes I learned that this was to allude to the cup of sorrow foretold by Jesus. He is also seen with and eagle (to represent the evangelist and a book and sometimes a cauldron. He is patron of authors, booksellers, printers, typesetters etc. Places: Mostly Asia Minor as that is where he set up churches.

Half-point each for lance; accountants/bankers; security forces/guards; Salerno; and Trier. I make that 2.5pts You could have accrued further points for mentioning that icons often depict him with a bag of money, and that additional emblems are a book and an angel, as per the attached image: Leader: [glow=red,2,300]Elsie 2.5pts[/glow]

3) St Luke is often seen with either a book or more commonly a brush because he was a painter. He is patron of Artists, book binders and brewers!! Also glassworkers. And - unmarried men!!. Places: Hermersdorf, Germany. Half-point each for book and brush/painter, although the tradition that Luke was a painter seems to have no basis in fact. Several images of Mary appeared in later centuries claiming him as a painter but these claims were proved false. Because of this tradition, however, he is considered a patron of painters of pictures and is often portrayed as painting pictures of Mary. Half-point also for book binders, brewers, glassworkers, unmarried men and Hermersdorf. I make that 3.5pts. What you could have had:St Luke is often shown with an ox or a calf - often winged -because these are the symbols of sacrifice -- the sacrifice Jesus made for all the world. He is also the patron of physicians, surgeons, doctors, goldsmiths and sculptors. Leaderboard: [glow=red,2,300]Elsie 6pts[/glow]

Well done, you know your confirmation saint well, I'm pleased to report ! ;D 5pts. Leaderboard: [glow=red,2,300]Elsie 11pts[/glow]

Patron saint of difficult marriages, kings and separated spouses 11) Will award you 1.5pts for Wales/Pembrokeshire; vegetarians and poets. The best-known miracle associated with Saint David is said to have taken place when he was preaching in the middle of a large crowd at the Synod of Llanddewi Brefi. When those at the back complained that they could not see or hear him, the ground on which he stood is reputed to have risen up to form a small hill so that everyone had a good view. A white dove was seen settling on his shoulder — a sign of God's grace and blessing. Thus St David is usually depicted with a dove on his shoulder, and you could also have had leek as an emblem. 12) 2.5 points for five associations. St Dorothy is also the patron saint of gardeners (and mysteriously of Prussia), and is usually depicted holding the Christchild by hand, and holding a basket of flowers and fruit in the other. There is a conflicting account of her martyrdom which is researchable on the net. 13) St Edward is of course the Confessor, usually depicted holding a large ring or handing it to a pilgrim. He was England's patron before St George. Half-point each for king, ring, beggar, difficult marriages, and separated spouses, making 2.5pts. Leaderboard: 1. Wolfman 38pts 2. Elsie 11pts

14.St George is shown as a horseback rider killing a dragon with a lance. He is the patron saint of England 15.St Michael is the saint of ambulance drivers, artists, bakers and banking 16.St Nicholas is saint of children, sailers, fishermen, the falsely accused, pawnbrokers and thieves 17.St Sebastian is shown as a youth tied to a tree being shot by arrows. He is saint to archers, armourers, arrowsmiths and athletes 14. Your description amounts to "Knight with dragon" - 1pt; patron saint of England 0.5pts. Could have had more for saying "patron of cavalrymen/chivalry/soldiers" or for the additional emblem of a red cross on a shield or banner. Never mind, 1.5pts in all. 15. St Michael the Archangel has a whole host of patronages according to this page: www.catholic-forum.com/saints/saintm06.htm......but you've chosen four good ones. His emblem is a sword and scales which he clutches, resplendent with his angel wings. He is sometimes depicted trampling a dragon or the devil. 2pts. 16. St Nicholas - or Santa as we know him - is all those things you describe, so 3pts. He is also patron saint of captives, and his emblem (strangely) is three balls. Icons also depict him alongside a tub containing three children. 17. St Sebastian correct as stated for 2.5pts. He is also patron of ironmongers and potters. Leaderboard: 1. Wolfman 47pts 2. Elsie 11pts

18.St Zita is saint to lost keys, maids, servers and waiters 19.St Giles is shown as a hermit. He is saint to disabled people, cancer patients, hermits and horses 20.St Jerome is an aged monk in the desert reading the Bible, often with a lion. He is saint to archeologists, librarians and school children 18. St Zita is the patron of domestic servants and her emblem is a serving maid with key and rosary. So 0.5pt for keys and 0.5 for maids/servers/waiters. 1pt. 19. Apart from the ones you correctly named, St Giles is patron to beggars and blacksmiths. He is indeed depicted as a hermit and often simply as an old man, but more often than not with a hind: 2pts. 20. I have as my notes, simply: "Emblems - Lion, Cardinal's hat and book; patron of students". So, I think, 0.5 each for lion; monk; bible; schoolchildren; and taking your word on the archeologists and librarians, a further 1.0 also, making 3pts. FINAL TABLE: 1. Wolfman 53pts 2. Elsie 11pts Quiz closed, and Wolfman and Elsie have now both achieved a "state of grace". ;D
