I have just found out that Proboards are in process of changing all forums to being a secure https URL. I don't know if anyone has started getting "this is not a secure site" warnings for the current http logon but that is the reason.
Nothing has changed with the forum and if you do get a "this site is not secure" message, it's your browser being a part of the push to get sites to use "SSL" higher security URL's.
I need time to investigate this but have been up to my ears elsewhere on the forum and with AEBBA stuff. Secure https URLs are available now on this forum but will cause some of the existing images not to display such as the forum banner.
I need to investigate further.

The problem appears to be that images hosted externally to the forum on standard http URLs will not display when linked from the forum https (SSL) higher security site (or any SSL site).
This is just as a big a problem to us as the loss of tinypic was to the loss of historic data.
Looking at it simplistically, the difference between the two protocols is that when you log onto any standard http site the data is exchanged in plain text between your browser and the site server.
Using https higher security means that the data is sent encrypted. In theory UID's and passwords etc could be hacked on non SSL sites during transmission. Why anyone should go to all this trouble on forums is beyond me!
I don't plan on spending hours and hours on this in the immediate future as I said previously I hardly seem to have left this chair for the last few weeks, just as well I've been recovering from hip replacement!!
Hopefully some clever person will invent a plugin to get around it.

Found a work-around for the critical banner and background images by storing the linked images in spare space in the forum chubbskin theme that we all use, grabbing the URL and using those.
Jelly has also come up with an idea thanks.
See what transpires when the change happens

Can we not just store image files on a secure https site somewhere or am I being naive?

Can we not just store image files on a secure https site somewhere or am I being naive? Perfectly true Tony. Apart from the physicalities of moving them there is the problem that free sites come and go and we have been bitten there before and there are no funds to pay for a hosting. I've switched to using the https:// SSL secure site myself and am dealing with problems as I encounter them. Forum wallpaper and loco did not display as did not some icons. What 'SHOULD' happen is that the image sites will eventually convert to https SSL as well. When that happens the HTTP non high security URLs will automatically redirect to their secure site, but ONLY if it exists. The transition will thus be a mess with images not displayed. We already have hundreds of dead tinypic logos on historic stuff around the forum that is lost for ever. The good thing this time is that the pictures should be recoverable. The forum is now working fine as an SSL site so I am relaxed about a (hopefully few) people's images starting to fail to display, hopefully temporarily.

Maybe the next iteration of ProBoards will give us so much storage space we won't need off-site storage....
