19 Funnily enough (!) I read about this chap this morning and he is William Windsor (aka Billy) who was demoted from being the mascot of the 1st Battalion Royal Welch for not keeping in step....! :'( Tony From the Nicosia times: - The six-year-old mascot for a British army battalion has been demoted in disgrace for acting the goat during a parade in full view of dignitaries. Billy Goat has been a mascot of the First Battalion, the Royal Welsh regiment, since he was six months old and had the official rank of lance-corporal before his frisky antics during a parade marking the Queen's official birthday earlier this month. The army said he had been demoted to fusilier (private) as a result of his behaviour. "The goat major had a hard time keeping him in line, he was bouncing around all over the place," military spokesman Captain Crispian Coates told Reuters on Saturday. Doubly embarrassing was Billy's refusal to obey commands in front of diplomats and army top brass, Coates said. "This is his first overseas tour. He has certainly not made a good start for himself." Would have got the full two points for mentioning the demotion from lance-corporal to private for "acting the goat" (how else is a goat supposed to act, one wonders ?) - but worth 1.5pts nonetheless. [glow=red,2,300]Barbelman 2.5pts[/glow]

I thought I'd have a go at this in between coats of paint! (and it's bleedin' hard)
1 Saanan, British and rest of Europe 4 Alpine goat, Switzerland 6 Angora goat from Asia Minor 7 Cahmere goat from Australasia 10 Fainting goat from USA which has a genetic condition called myotonia congenita which causes it to FAINT when startled 11 Toggenburg from Switzerland 12 Oberhasli from Switzerland 13 Boer goat from South Africa 14 La Mancha goat from Spain 15 Kiko from New Zealand 17 Are they the only goats that donkeys tolerate - I understand that they don't get on at all well.... :o 18 Is it called Bill the Goat who is the mascot of the United States Naval Academy. The mascot is a live goat and is also represented on occasion by a costumed midshipman. There is also a bronze statue of the goat just inside Gate 1, the main gate to the Academy grounds. In the 1880s, ships sailed with livestock in order to provide sailors with fresh food. There is a legend that a Navy ship sailed with a pet goat. The goat died during the cruise. The officers preserved the skin, to have it mounted when they returned to port. Two young ensigns were entrusted with the skin. On the way to the taxidermist, they stopped by the United States Naval Academy to watch a football game. At half time, one ensign decided to dress up in the goat skin. The crowd appreciated the effort. Navy won the game and the victory was attributed to the late, lamented goat. (but I think I have the wrong goat here.... :-/)
cheers

Tremendous effort and very difficult to score, but I make it 16.5 points to be awarded.
Taking them one by one, 1. correct, for the remaing 1.5 available. 4. incorrect, the size should give a clue. 6. spot on, 2pts 7. nice try, but not right 10. all 3pts won. The Tennessee Fainting Goat's plight is a physical as well as mental one, as its muscular spasms when alarmed cause its legs to lock, whereupon it falls over onto its side. A condition also prevalent in Northamptonshire circles, apparently, however the cause (alcohol-induced stupor) is slightly different ! ;) It has been said to extend as far as Kent, to those with two-wheeled transport. ;D ;D ;D 11. Now you've given the perfect answer, but to another question, so I'm going to award you half-a-point for this question, plus half-a-point for the "correct" one without specifying which one it is ! 12. Spot-on for 2pts 13. Ditto for 2pts 14. Ditto for 2pts (also now bred in the USA) 15 Ditto for 2pts 17 is incorrect 18. Correct inasfaras your comment of getting the wrong goat ! But your lengthy tale (tail ?) about the other one is worthy of a bonus point. I should add that I have actually seen number 18 (and learned of its folklore) whilst on holiday in Ireland.
Scores so far :
1. Barbelman 24.5pts 2. Sav 1pt 3. Herr van Puebik 0.5pts
(Points left to get on 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 11, 16, 17 & 18.)

Thanks, Tommo
In that case 5 must be the Toggenburg from Switzerland?
Is 18 (thanks for the clue) King Puck, the goat statue in Killorglin on the Ring of Kerry (which I must have seen too!)? Legend has it that a wild goat warned the town of the advance of Oliver Cromwell. The Roundheads tried to catch some goats up in the hills but the goats were too fast and escaped. One male goat got separated from the herd and fled down to Killorglin where he alerted the villagers to the raid. The villagers, having a chance to prepare their defences, won the battle. Every year a group of people go up into the mountains and catch a wild goat. This goat is brought back to the town and a young person crowns the goat "King Puck". It marks the start of the town's Puck Fair which is an interesting Spoonerism! ;D
