As mentioned earlier in History Quiz VII, over 800 monasteries, abbeys and priories were laid waste to midway through the 16th century and - apart from those that were especially retained to become cathedrals (namely Gloucester, Ely, Chester, Durham, Norwich, St Albans, Peterborough & Winchester) - only 30 remain intact. Some of these are in private ownership and/or have been adapted for a separate non-secular purpose.
Here are half of them for you to name, and in each case a picture, their county and one other clue is given. 1pt for each.
1.
County Down; dissolved later under James I.
2.
Somerset, now serves as a Parish Church.
3.
Berkshire, now a manor house housing one of five National Sports Centres.
4.
Lincs, now serves as a parish church.
5.
Northumberland, stages an annual classical music festival.
6.
Devon, back in use as a monastery, now Benedictine order (formerly Cistercian).
7.
Cumbria, has been a prison, a grammar school, now a museum.
8.
London (Smithfield) - was used as public school, but this has since been relocated to Godalming.
9.
Dorset, a living church;legend of the "miraculous beam" changed the name of the town from Twynham to that of the present day.
10.
Northampton, estate purchased by the Corporation from the War Office.
11.
Herefordshire, in use as a church, though restored in 17th century lacks a nave.
12.
Dorset, an elegant stately home.
13.
Worcestershire, now serves as a parish church.
14.
Northumbria, now a parish church, before served as an Augustinian priory on the site of a cathedral.
15.
Wiltshire, now National Trust, some interior sequences in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets were filmed here.
Further clue - these are A-L; M-Z are to follow in Part II !
Good luck !
