I stumbled across some televised bar billiards when trying to find examples of bar billiards on YouTube.com, and frankly couldn't believe how rubbish the standard was!
Does anyone remember watching it? Are any of these players still playing?

If you trawl through this site you will see that this has been discussed at length julian, you can also buy DVDs of the series, the players were mostly from Yorks.

Not sure what makes you say that Ian. I was only just getting into the game when it was on in the mid 70s but I believed there was an invitation sent out to each association to send two players to the event which was staged IN Yorkshire. Our then-Secretary Mick Samwell and our far-and-away best player Brian Paul represented Northants, but maybe no-one else knew about it.
But, yes, this HAS been discussed at length in the past. Nothing wrong in brightening up the proceedings again. Not much else to chat about.

How the tables were set up for the Indoor League series was not really conducive to bar billiards - threadbare cloth, dead cushions etc.
I have the DVD at home, and the players really take a long time to make just a few hundred.
It was a bit of a joke really, and didn't really do our game any favours.

It was difficult to get the scores going, as I recall, because players were limited to 45 secs for each visit.

I just missed out by 10 mins in appearing on the TV with Freddie Trueman. The year it was on i was playing in the Men's Individual Final against the late Tony Sculley and a certain Mr Pete Wells came up to me and said Pete if you win your coming with me up to Yorkshire to appear on TV. Well i was in front with 10 mins to go and Tony hit back with a winning break, so it was him who went instead of me.
I do have a picture of Pete Wells playing from the local paper ( somewhere)

A search by name has turned this up: Does anyone remember Alan Ignatowski from the Reading and Newbury leagues? No, me neither. Never heard of him! He actually played at least once for England but would probably never have been picked again after walking out during his match against Harry Barbet in the early 1980s. Can't actually remember what happened, perhaps Harry will remember?

I have now got as far as I can with the research on this, so any further help now to fill in the gaps (eg the county for Tony Mayfield and Lawrence Brown, and whether the people are now still with us) would be appreciated.

Is Northants' Mick Samwell still playing ? No Clive, the last time I saw him was when he was invited to a presentation night in the 90s, might have been 92 or 97.

John Thayre (Sussex) - still alive and well and playing in Billingshurst LeagueWe played against John's team tonight and I took the opportunity of asking him about his recollections of the event. This is what he said: Teammate Brian Picking went up there with him and drove all the way; Yorkshire TV paid their expenses including the overnight stay. Despite this, John was disappointed with the experience, as the goes only lasted about 30 seconds each. Anyone getting off to a bad start usually struggled to make an impact, especially if there were several balls left to clear when starting your go. Each competitor had been asked to provide a list of his/her achievements in the game, and these were announced over the tannoy. John recalled the other 'sports' taking place alongside: table skittles, shove-ha'penny, table football and arm-wrestling - which involved some really burly and rowdy blokes from Wales ! Freddie himself was entertaining as one might expect.

Rod Tarratt (Sussex) - still alive and well, table operator for SussexI managed to catch up with Rod Tarratt this evening at the end of a busy week. Gerald Weston went up to Yorks as his wing man, and Rod's recollections are very similar to John's: Rod confirms that with TV coverage in mind each break was timed at 45 seconds, which came as a shock as it seemed to be an innovation that year. With the benefit of hindsight both he and John might have practiced for this, as it soon became apparent that: a) slow careful play was necessary on the Riley tables with easidrop pockets, to use every precious one of the 45 seconds (you couldn't afford to miss) and b) that if you happened to fall behind by a thousand there was no way back. Without having read John's memoirs he too mentioned Fiery Fred being entertaining, and the rowdy Welsh arm-wrestlers in the next room.

Analysis performed in the members area under "General Bar Billiards Matters" (thread : Indoor League"). So far we have 6 still around and 6 having passed on, but nothing is known of the Yorkshire names including Taffy John as as far as we can make out they were not part of any organised league. Where has my analysis (where I spent several days on) disappeared to, please, as I can't find it on this thread ? If it has been removed as part of a moderation exercise, would it not be a matter of courtesy to inform me ? If it is a genuine mistake, no problem as I can restore the information from my own Word files...... tommo

Thanks Tony,
Yes Chris, I deleted one of my posts on the thread yesterday as it looked out of place in what was left of the thread and wasn't vital.
I will now replace some of the information lost, but will stop short of putting up the personal data on the players who took part in Indoor League (i.e. whether they are still with us or not.)

We played the event in the Dragonara in Leeds. Met Fred Trueman and his Alsatians that came with him. It was a very different set up to normal Bar Billiards and timed play. I played very poorly. I also went there with the mens champ from Hants, Tony Mayfield who is on your list Clive. We were driven by a guy called John I think owned an electrical company ? Oh well those were the days The set up was strange, but the hospitality was great at the venue. What did make me laugh was on our day of leaving they changed the beer taps for milk taps as the arm wrestlers were in the next day to be filmed. xxx
