English History VII Quiz
This one covers a fascinating (for me, anyway ! ;D) period of five years in English History, known as The Reformation.
In his quest for a son and heir and a divorce from his first wife Catherine of Aragon (refused by the Pope), Henry VIII severed the ties of control by the Vatican and declared himself Supreme Head of the Church of England. The ultimate result was diminishment of the power and wealth of the church, but the benefit of a bible and prayer book written not in Latin but in English - which common people could understand.
Yet in bringing this about, Henry proved himself to be one of the biggest vandals of all time, as he ordered the Dissolution of the Monasteries - whereby in a short period of time over 800 beautiful abbeys and monasteries were destroyed, only about 30 remaining to this day: Their treasures were siezed and melted down, statues smashed, paintings defaced, books burned, stained glass windows broken and lead stripped from rooves. And many clergy were tried on trumped-up charges and executed, sometimes following torture.
The sacking, plus the sale of Church lands and property, gained the hitherto-bankrupt Henry VIII about £1.5 million in revenue.
Here are ten quiz questions from this period.
1. Which Act, passed in 1532, forced church assemblies to get royal approval for new religious laws?
2. Which Act, passed in the same year, stopped all payments of taxes to Rome?
3. Which Act, passed in 1533, forbade people from asking Rome to settle disputes?
4. Which Act, passed in 1534, declared the English monarch to be Head of the Church?
5. Which Act, passed in the same year, barred Catherine's daughter Mary from succeeding to the throne?
6. Which Act, also passed in 1534, outlawed denial of the king's supremacy ?
7. Who in 1535 began the first English translation of the Bible ?
8. In 1535 also a Vicar General was appointed, to assess the wealth of religious houses. Name him.
9. What, in 1538, was every parish church forced to buy ?
10.The dissolution of the monasteries turned many ordinary people against Henry: Noblemen in Lincolnshire and northern England used this discontent to start a rebellion, which spread across the country. The rebels demanded an end to the destruction of the religious houses and a return to rule by the Pope. Over 30,000 people took part in a peaceful march in Yorkshire. By what is this demonstration - which brought about the execution of 250 of its leaders - known?
That's it - another bloody history quiz, ::) I know. But good luck anyway !
