18. Dick Heckstall-Smith(RiP). I met him when I was working at the Twisted Wheel in Manchester in the early 60s. He was with Alexis Korner(also no longer with us). I think he moved on to a band called Colosseum

Spot on, Dave. Dick sadly died of cancer a couple of Christmasses ago.
Your answer is worth 3 points, including two for the associations. There are some good tributes available if you do a Google search, and perhaps this is the most eloquent and fitting one :
"Dick Heckstall-Smith...blows a sax mean enough to take a man's head off at 300 paces, yet mellow enough to soothe even the most irritable babe to sleep." - Nick Churchill

10. Julian "Cannonball" Adderley. I had an LP of him in Miles Davis' Sextet, but his main band after that was the Adderley Quintet which he formed with his younger brother Nat 13. Stan Getz began his career with big bands - Stan Kenton, Benny Goodman, and Woody Herman. In the 1950s, Stan was associated with a kind of jazz known as "cool jazz", playing in small bands with people like Gerry Mulligan, Oscar Peterson, and one Lionel Hampton. Non jazz fans will know of him from the hit - Girl from Ipenema by Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto 16. Lester Young, best known as a member of the Count Basie band, and was the boyhood hero of: 19. Charlie Parker(Bird or Yardbird), who himself was arguably the greatest ever jazz sax player. The Bird is perhaps best known for his association with Dizzy Gillespie, although he played as much if not more with Miles Davis. A list of the other people he played with would be a list of the all-time greats of modern jazz. He spent 4 of his formative years with Jay McShann And His Orchestra in the early 1940s
You can tell that I was a modern jazz fan in my youth! Which is why I didn't recognise Courtney Pine at No. 15!

Well, my hat is off to a true Jazz buff.
So let's examine your answers : 10. Cannonball Adderley - 1pt plus 2 bonus. 13. Stanley Gayetsky, aka the great Stan Getz who led a strange and somewhat tragic life - 1pt plus SEVEN bonus points for associations, and one extra for Girl from Ipanema. Would have been one more for his other massive hit Desafinado (1963). (Is Lionel of the twirling drumsticks any relation by the way ? ;D ) 16. Lester Young - 1pt plus 1 bonus. 19. Charlie Parker - 1pt plus 3 bonus. 15. Courtney Pine - correct for 1pt.
It seems strange to be marking a schoolmaster's work, but I make that 19 points, so well done !

The only ones that remain are 9, 11, 14 and 17.
11) Is another jazz 'great'; 9) was attached to a pop band of the early seventies, and Martin Leach should be able to recognise 14 and 17 quite easily from his comments on the Favourite Band thread.

14 - It's not actually.
17. 5pts for Jaxon because a) I'm feeling generous and b) I'm going to see Van Der Graaf next Monday (at the Barbican).

That 'perfect' answer is worth not only 3pts but oodles of bonuses. Let me see, 5 'association points' to be added. And you can have an extra point for every time I've been to see Caravan - let me see, once at the Astoria, once at Deal, once at Canterbury, once at the Bloomsbury and once at the Old Market, Brighton, makes 5. So that's 13 in all. ;D ;D ;D
