The boundaries of the UK’s traditional counties were redrawn in 1974 and 1975 (by Harold Wilson’s newly-elected Labour Government) – “for administration purposes”. The new counties were regarded as artificial by many people and the traditional names continue to be widely used. Some like Avon have since been abolished and some like Salop have since reverted back to their original names. In an attempt at justification, the 1974 Act stated “the new county councils are solely for the purpose of defining areas of first-level government of the future: they are administration areas and will not alter the traditional boundaries”. Anyway, these are all Districts – with their own Councils – within administrative counties of England. The question is – WHERE ?
Thirty years have passed, and although I could draw you a map of England with all the counties in from memory and mark in most of the major towns, I still wouldn’t be able to tell you where half of these Districts are situated.
So here’s the first 30, and you can earn 1pt for naming the County boundary within which they lie, and 1pt for any of main towns covered by the District. Complicated ? You bet !
1 Kingswood 2 Wansdyke 3 Woodspring 4 Halton 5 Vale Royal 6 Langbaurgh 7 Caradon 8 Carrick 9 Kerrier 10 Allerdale 11 Copeland 12 Erewash 13 South Hams 14 Torridge 15 Sedgefield 16 Wealden 17 Castle Point 18 Tendring 19 Uttlesford 20 Tameside 21 Rushmoor 22 Wychavon 23 Dacorum 24 Hertsmere 25 Three Rivers 26 Glanford 27 Medina 28 Shepway 29 Swale 30 Hyndburn
Good luck !

I can't give any bonus for Southamptonshire as Q21 Rushmoor is only a tiny top right-hand corner of the county, and in any case Southamptonshire pre-dates the changes of 1974/5 which is what this quiz is about. Here's what Wikipedia says on the subject : The county has in the past been called "Southamptonshire" and appears as such on some Victorian maps. The name of the administrative county was changed from 'County of Southampton' to 'County of Hampshire' on April 1, 1959. Leaderboard : [glow=red,2,300]Wolfman 67.5pts[/glow]

Boy, I've started something here ! Working backwards, 28. New Romney rather than Romney Marsh. Where tommo got his bar billiards table from ! 26. Guess what ! Glanford no longer exists ! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GlanfordSo I have to allow Lincolnshire as it's now - along with the enclave of Scunthorpe - part of N.E.Lincs Borough Council. The Glanford part contained Brigg and Barton-on-Humber. 25. Watford is a borough in its own right. You could have had Chorleywood instead. 20. Half-point for Lancashire, technically it's in the metropolitan county of Greater Manchester. 5. Crewe is part of the Borough of Crewe and Nantwich; for Vale Royal you could have had Northwich or Frodsham. 2. Another one that no longer exists ! Wansdyke is now part of Bath & North-East Somerset unitary authority - so both your answers are correct. Wansdyke included Keynsham, Midsomer Norton and Radstock. 1. And ditto Kingswood, which, when the county of Avon was abolished in 1996, was grouped with Northavon to form the South Gloucestershire District. Primarily suburbs of Bristol (notably Mangotsfield) though, so can't allow Gloucester which has its own City Council. Have adjusted your points to the final tally of 67.5. Great effort !
