From the B'hurst website:
09 Nov 2021 Cable makes World Plate Final: still life in the old dog yet !
Mixed fortunes in the World Championships (Singles) held in Jersey on Sunday with outstanding performances from Dick Cable appearing in the Plate final ( In doing so, played 11 frames of bar billiards) - and occasional Roffey SSC teammate Denise Wills who made the Quarter-final of the Main competition (10 frames and a Bye) – a rare accolade for a lady !
Dick finished last in his qualifying Group 2 of only 3 players before embarking on his great run, whilst Denise topped her group, beating two Jersey players.
Of the remainder of Billingshurst’s contingent , John Slee and Jim Balchin bombed in the Doubles (falling at the first hurdle to a Jersey pair – as did Denise, partnering Genette Nicholls) but at least managed a win each in the Singles. John Miller did a reverse of the situation, failing to win a singles in his group and then scratching from the Plate, but had a great run in the World Doubles, partnering Surrey star Dave Constable to the Quarter-finals. Meanwhile Dick found himself lined up with Stuart Mepham to face Alan and Jean Brackenridge when both original partners had dropped out. They lost 2710-4340 and 2530-2380.
Back to the Singles, and Slee survived a tough group 4 with only three players, beating Kent’s Richard Corbould 4450-2780 but losing to Jersey’s Harry “The Spider” Barbet 1740-1970. His hopes were dashed at the last 64 stage by England captain Curt Driver (also of Kent) by 2910-8610 and 660-7010.
