Jock, I never realised that you were such a scholar. When we roomed in Jersey last November there was I thinking that all those rantings and ramblings in your sleep were about virgins - when all the time they were about Vergil ! ;D

7) worth 1.5pts: more accurate than Craig's and includes half-point for the rival quotation. My own preference however is for the original, it's widely used in Chess, in the context of for example "bishop takes pawn and wins" - when there is not an immediate checkmate but the position is undefendable.

Tommo - think I should have the full point for QED, as it is used now in science/maths to mean " as proven", and wanted to save you time reading it, rather than "which is to be demonstrated" or some such. Honest ;)

What can I say I is good at Latin!

Well Craig, I marked you down as I have tried to adhere to the absolute meaning of the Latin, and quod erat ......... suggests something still to be done, whereas if it were already proven it would be quod est (i.e. the present rather than the future tense).
However the Oxford Dictionary confirms your claimed usage thus: "used to say that something proves the truth of your claim."
So in retrospect I have been a bit harsh, and it's Q.E.D. to you ! ;)
