Chances in 4 of the 5 legs tonight, with only Jim kicking off with enough (10.8k) on his opening break, 3 of the chances taken first visit by the player against the break. A result that keeps everything to play for next Thursday in the 2nd leg. As always, an enjoyable evening in great company with some lovely hot roast potatoes with toppings provided by Jim and Heather.

A closely fought encounter with all games going with the break tonight, although there were chances in 3 of the games.... Game 1 - Phil started well but came off on just under 3k, no luck for Bob in trying to get the break back and Phil made sure next visit. 1-0 Game 2 - Jim caught a split thick on 5k and came off, leaving one ball right in front of the white peg, Tupps tried to clear it but just knocked it over and Jim made enough next visit. 1-1 Game 3 - Excellent 10k and touch from Mark to give Matt no chance, Mark then showing no mercy to finish the game off. 1-2 Game 4 - Jean put her one up behind on just under 2k, Martin had to work hard to get the break back but then came off on 1.4k. Jean made a very good 7k break to level the match on the night with both players having another break each after that. 2-2 So, all square on the night and the visitors 5-4 up overall going into the last leg with my break to come.... Game 5 - A couple of slightly nervous 10 splits combined with an excursion around the back of the table after catching a 100 split too thick was not an ideal start, but I then managed to settle down and touched on just under 11k to make sure. Nigel had no luck trying to get the break back and, after a few visits each, I finished the game off to take the win. 2-3 A 6-4 overall win for the "Bronze Medallists" against the Worthing League Champions to take us into the final. It would probably be fair to say that we had a good draw in both matches, which always helps, and they were both very enjoyable evenings with plenty of laughs and friendly banter. Many thanks to Jim and Heather for another helping of the roast potatoes that were loaded with tasty toppings.

2 very enjoyable and entertaining evenings spent in excellent company, with some high quality bar billiards. Raucous at times, no surprise considering some of those in attendance That being said it was eerily silent when Dave was on the table in the tenth leg, compiling an excellent break to win the tie for his team. Showed how close the two matches were that it came down to that, after Jean had compiled an excellent break of her own to keep the tie alive The draw is always going to make life harder for us, especially in this tie as Nigel did not get a meaningful go in either leg Good luck to the Seas in, what I am sure will be a blockbuster final whoever they play, wonder if they will turn "bronze" into "gold"?

Chances in all games with the table catching many out with the left hand drift, especially if you took the pace of the ball, but a well deserved whitewash for the home team. 2nd leg next Tuesday at the Alexandra seems to be academic but as we know it`s a funny old game. Terry not fluent but opened with 6.5k giving Pete a chance but he was unable to get the break back and Terry made sure. Steve off at under 1k and then scrappy game before Stuart got the balls back and made an interesting 4k, Steve balls back near the end with just enough time but not to be. James first one up behind, Mike balls back 1st and worked a good 8k break only to peg it with 2 minutes left leaving him 500 ahead, James unable to capitalise. Stuart opened with 4k +. Rick no luck at top of table and Stuart 1st to get them back and make sure, Rick just about played the time out. TJ never settled but built a 3.5k break but the inevitable happened KT balls back and made sure of the white wash. Thank you to the Henty for hosting us and suppling a chicken pasta back. Look forward to the return next week.

As expected the Henty progress to the semi-final where they will play the Prince of Wales. Steve off at 800 and then neither Mike or Steve could get the break back but Mike out battled James at the top of the table to take the vital leg. Stuart lost his opening break and Rick had a break 0f 5k and 4k to secure the leg before adding some more at the end. Kevin touched on enough then time spent at top of table before I got the balls back with about 2 minutes left and finished off Pete off at 1.5k and with Terry showing no interest in a dead leg Pete got himself 2.5k ahead before Terry did get the balls back with over 3 minutes left. Terry decided to play one handed and break 3 times, one up but missed the split leaving Pete the win Stuart off at 200 James break back but off early, Stuart pegged close on 5k but was still leading by 700 when James got the break back but off early again, Stuart balls back and made sure this time with 4k break Well played the Henty and good luck in the semi-finals.

Live scores of first leg of Watney Mann Cup Final....
Stag's Head C 2 Prince of Wales 0
Dave Ingram 13,570* Barry Holt 870 Unusual start to the evening with the bar trapping balls in the right hand 50 from almost the start of the game and I ran out of white balls to use! We decided to restart the game and I touched on a slow 10.5k that included a few excursions. We both had small breaks after that before the bar started playing up again, luckily the bar dropped before we ran out of balls.... 1-0
Jim and Martin Cole had another look at the table before the next game started and they made a temporary fix.
Mark James 10,420 Martin Cole 0* Martin off on 1.3k, Mark took full advantage with an excellent 10k and touch. Martin had to fly to have any chance but took the black peg out trying to clear the balls. 2-0
Martin Smith 1,720 Joe Oakley 11,250* Lovely 11k opener from Joe to give Martin no chance. Martin got the break back but the bar dropped at around 16 minutes. 2-1
Jim Millward 13,230* Daniel Wheal 150 With the noise levels definitely increasing, Jim did well to retain his concentration to open with 10k to take the leg. Jim added a few more at the end. 3-1
Grant Tully 920 Chris Cox 9,680* Chris never really looked comfortable but played some good recovery shots to make sure first visit, Grant got the valls back and didn't miss but the bar dropped earlier than usual again. 3-2
A good result for the home team which makes it all to play for in the second leg next week at the Prince of Wales. 😀

Prince of wales 4-2 stag C
*Barry holt 10,580 vs 1780 Grant Tully Joe oakley 8,860 vs 4680 Mark James* Dan wheal 740 vs 10,720 Dave Ingram* *Martin cole 15,100 vs 100 Jim Milward Chris cox 0 vs 11,270 Martin Smith
Leg 1 Barry 9.8k and touch. Leg 2 mark 3k and 1 up behind, Joe balls back 8k and touch. Leg 3 Dave off 5.5k (never settled) Dan didn’t get balls back Dave enough and touch. Leg 4 Martin 10 and touch and took full advantage to not show Jim the table. Leg 5 Martin off around 4K a few goes each and Martin first back and made sure on 6k
Leg 6 (WOW) Jim Millward 14490 v Martin Cole 14590
Jim table run out a few excursions 14,980
Martin kicked off well got to 8k without looking like missing then drama! Got the 100 hole off the split but the 50 going inside or out? Leaving it in the middle of the table between the 100 and 200………. Off the side got one ball in the hole a few interesting shots one nearly missing the ball he got them back to make enough!
Many shots and celebrations went on! Away team amazing company and great supporters and wish us all the best of luck in the team championships!
Thanks to Matt for scoring the 6th leg and Ian and Nigel for supporting anyone that got them a drink!

Sounds a great game can you confirm Martins score please and good luck to the Prince of Wales representing Sussex in the Team Championships Hi Tony, It was a great game which could easily have gone either way on the night. Joe beat me to put the result up, two corrections to his scores with Martin Smith scoring 11,270 rather than 11,870 and Jim Millward setting a target of 14,490 rather than 14,980. With regards to the decider, what a super game to watch.... it literally had a bit of everything! Jim whipped his first split but then settled down to play the table out for a very steady 14,490 albeit with a couple of excursions up the table, but he didn't look like missing. It's never easy to chase a target like that but Martin started superbly and didn't look like missing until around 8k when the red ball whipped out of the 50 hole on a split shot to end up smack bang in the middle of the table. Martin played off the side cushion, balls could have gone anywhere but he deserved his bit of luck when one found it's way into one of the holes at the top of the table. Then the real drama started.... his next 5 or 6 shots really showed the pressure that he was under, I don't think any of the balls he aimed at actually went in the holes he intended. He nearly completely missed a ball behind the 20 hole, next shot and both balls were missing the holes until they double kissed and one went down, he then played a good shot and got the break back.... after that, Martin played superbly to chase Jim's score down with a couple of minutes to spare and ended up with 15,590.A superb evening, great atmosphere and camaraderie between the teams, two top quality games in the final between 2 very good teams. Congratulations to the Prince of Wales team on winning the competition this year and best of luck to them when they represent Sussex at the AEBBA Team Finals.

I think Martin’s score must have been 14,590 rather than 15,590, as the game finished with the shot that overtook Jim’s score.

Thank you Dave and Mark and sure the Prince of Wales be worthy representatives of Sussex at the Team Championships.
The standard by both teams in the Watney Mann final shows why Sussex bar billiards sets a high standard. Look forward to Worthing Premier Division this coming season with both of these teams competing, the Stags Head B defending their title, The Henty looking to once again push for honours and the Vine looking to upset the apple cart.
