Classy quiz, Jock, so I'll now give it the attention it merits.......
3 (Carter) A transporter of light goods (in a cart). As opposed to a "Tranter" who was for haulage. I suppose in modern day terms, the tranter would be a lorry driver, whereas the carter would be WHITE VAN MAN. ;D
4 (Draper) A dealer in cloth, sewing materials and dry goods. Modern equivalent : Haberdasher.
5 (Faber) A labourer - usually of the unskilled variety, whereas the skilled would have been known as a Smith.
11 (Marshall) One who looked after horses - modern day equivalent a groom. But the term was also in use to describe one who looked after the horses' hooves - in modern day terms, a blacksmith.

Ok Tommo me lad
carter I have is a wagon driver, so I'll give you that!!! + 1 for reference to white van man! Draper I have is a dealer in dry goods, so you can have that as well. Faber I have as an Artisan, so no points there. Marshall i have as a horse doctor, your nearly there with some one who looks after horses though so 0.5.
so 3.5 all in.
quiz closed wolfman 14 tommo 8.5

5 (Faber) A labourer - usually of the unskilled variety, whereas the skilled would have been known as a Smith. You're right in that I was wrong on this. The Faber was a skilled labourer, so the modern-day term would be a Craftsman (or Craftswoman) It's okay, though, I'm not after any more points, I'm more than happy with my eight-and-a-half. ;)
