Look forward to seeing everyone at the weekend. With the Saturday Group format, there will be the usual charts on the wall so hopefully players can track their progress during the day. In addition I will be trying to keep this page updated so people there can see on the phones the latest state of play and also provides a bit of info for people not there. So keep the following link below handy aebba.co.uk/group-stages/

Great weekend well run and great format again with plenty of games for all. Thank you to Nigel and Matt for running the competition and keeping things moving along. Thank you to Chelle and Sammy for all their work arranging the weekend with the hotel. Thanks to Jean the AEBBA secretary for all her hard work. Food good and I personally found the staff helpful. The only learning curve might be not to move the barrels of real ale from one place to another not the best way to make sure it is in cask marque condition. The hotel cancelling their Sunday Lunch on the Sunday certainly helped keep the room more bearable as we were able to have the doors open.
Thank you to Stuart Mepham, Keith Sheard, Denis Atkins, Geoff Jukes and the rest of the team that got everything into the venue and set up, tables good standard and think I am right all tables held some good scores. A great standard of bar billiards all weekend and well done to the winners and runners-ups. Lastly a special thank you to Martin Cole and Jason Neal who were immense in getting the tables out at the end despite a distinct lack of bodies. Well done to Ashley Harrison, Rick Cunningham, Doug Dawson, Jack Baden, Martin Kemsley who did their best to help and again to Stuart Mepham for driving the van down and then being the man on the van when it was being reloaded. Thanks to Curt Driver who took the van back to Kent ready for the Kent Classic and for the van to be serviced.
Last but certainly least thank you to the delightful lady who sold the raffle tickets raising a great sum of money in the process.
Hopefully I have not missed anyone out and also must say scoring was not so much of a problem as it can be but it was still noticeable that it still fell on the shoulders of the normal volunteers.

Echo everything Tony said, well done to Mark and Matt on winning the trophy. It looked all over at 2 down with Phil's break to come but about Phil's only slip of the weekend left the door open and the winners took advantage. Matt keeping his nerve in the final leg. Still a great weekend for Phil and Leon so well done to them. Mark took the high break with 23,310
Well done to the Plate Winners of Janet Burns and Jon Scoones, Jon especially strong in the final making a winning break to pinch a great final. Well done to the Isards who were runners up
Alan Brackenridge took the merit award with some excellent performances in helping him and Jean win the difficult both numbers wise and ability wise group 1 with a 100% record. Jean also won the ladies high break with 6710 so well done to her
Thank you to Sami and Michelle for all their hard work especially in building a great rapport with the hotel, unfortunately this was somewhat tarnished by an altercation on Friday night, these matters should be kept outside of the venue and outside of bar billiards. In the backwash Michelle got injured and had to spend the night in hospital. Very sadly she had to miss out on playing and Heather kindly stepped in to partner Doug. Fortunately Michelle did not suffer serious injury but it's certainly something we can do without. (Gerry Fitz had his own problems which meant he ended up in hospital, hope he feels better soon)
Nigel did another amazing job running a great competition, even better considering he had barely an hours sleep the first night. Those that organise tournaments like Nigel really need to be cherished. Personally I would like to thank Jean and Kevin Tunstall for their help on Saturday morning when there was the possibility Nigel would not be ready in time
Thank you to those who helped set up the tables, they played extremely well. Whilst speaking highly of Nigel I also cannot thank enough Jason Neal (second year running) and Martin Cole for their incredible efforts in removing the tables from the event room, in the lift and then with great assistance from Tony Jenner, Rick Cunningham, Jack Baden all repeating their hard work from last year getting them on the van. Thank you to Doug Dawson for his efforts to help with this as well. As TJ says we needed extra bodies so I made a call and thankfully Ash Harrison obliged to assist with the workload. Thanks to him. Thanks to everyone who helped take the tables down and clear the rest of the room. We really do need more bodies at the end of all events because it is always the same people who help despite different people playing. Every Sussex or All England event that Stuart Mepham is involved in he works tirelessly for our enjoyment, thank you Stu.
Kim you did a great job again on the raffle raising funds on behalf of the AEBBA
It was great to see everyone again, hope you enjoyed it

ditto to all the thanks that have been mentioned, plus Jean for delivering great quizzes both nights.

A summary below of the competition from me. Full details of the scores etc will be available on the website but that will probably happen next week. 49 pairs entered the competition (2 pairs up form October). These were split into 8 groups, 7 of 6 and 1 of 7. As last year the groups of 6 would play 5 games, each pair getting a break each, last game being pairs choice and equal opportunity. Top 3 pairs to go into main and bottom 3 going into the plate.
Group A – the group of 7 and toughest group. This was topped by Alan & Jean Brackenridge who won all 6 games. Alan was like a machine barely missing a shot. This put pressure on one of the big favourites, Leon Beer & Phil Collins, but they won the 4 games that they got a chance in to secure 2nd. 3rd spot was tight – former winners Pete Phillips & Steven Sheard edged through winning their last 2 games to get past Andy & Pete Godden and Caroline & Dave Jones on aggregate.
Group B – Alan Donovan & Stu Mepham won the group thanks to a drawn game. Two time champs Marc Chipman & Nigel Senior made it through safely in 2nd, Bob Hall & Phil Osborne also making it through finishing 3rd.
Group C – New pair but one of the big favourites Mark Trafford & Matt Jones had no problems here winning ll 5 at 10,774 average. Ernie Jordan & Ray Hussey and Jon Tyson & Leanne Tyson (who do very well in the pairs in the last couple of year) got 3 wins apiece to progress
Group D – A bit of a surprise to see Cliff Slade & Richard Hawes make it through unbeaten. No surprise to see Curt Driver & Gerry Fitzjohn get through despite losing to Cliff and Richard. Andy Burns & Phil Hawkins the other pair to progress.
Group E – Long standing pairing Dennis Atkins & Geoff jukes top group E with 4 wins out of 5. 3 pairs got 3 wins – Jim Greensted & Stephen Coleman plus Damian Coates & Mel Stanbridge eliminate Darren Isard & Terry Isard on points. Group F – Allan Lacey & Phil Griffin improve from last October from finishing last in their group to finishing top with 4 wins this time around. 3 wins were enough for Dave Constable & Tony Cross and Brian Richards & Chris Richards.
Group G – Reigning champions for the past 2 years Kevin Tunstall & Martin Cole go through unbeaten. Jason Neal & Simon Coleman record 4 wins. Jim Millward & Joe Oakley scrape through – only pair to make it through with 2 wins!
Group H – Jack Baden & Matt Knight top scorers (11,046 average) for the whole day, unbeaten with 5 wins. Plus days high break from Matt of 19,050. Their reward a probable clash with Leon & Phil in the last 16. Colin Robbins & Gary Powell through on 4 wins. Rick Cunningham & Tony Jenner get 3 wins to make it through
Into the Sunday, the plate competition had 25 pairs in it. Darren Isard & Terry Isard were possible favourites here – the only pair to miss out on the main with 3 wins (in the groups of 6). They progressed to the final fairly comfortably. Here they met Janet Burns and Jon Scoones who much improved their Saturday form (finishing 6th in Group A). They survived a close match against Ash Harrison & Lewis Stratford to win by 60 points, plus a 2-2 aggregate win in the 4 leg semi over Andy & Pete Godden. The final also went to a decider, Janet & Jon getting home on aggregate with a late break form Jon to win it 26,590-24,140
Onto the main, where the 2nd and 3rd place teams from Saturday played off to meet the group winners. Former winner Leon & Phil, Marc & Nigel and Pete & Steven made it through safely. Unfortunately top pairing Curt & Gerry had to pull out with Gerry having health issues the night before, thankfully he is ok now.
Into the last 16, Jean got the high ladies break to ensure her and Alan knocked out Surrey’s Robbins and Powell. Alan Donovan & Stu Mepham put out Jason & Simon form Northants. Mark Trafford & Matt Jones had Bob Hall & Phil Osborne run them close. Slade & Hawes were put out by Pete Philiips & Steven Sheard. Rick & TJ did well to beat Atkins & Jukes. Jim Millward with a 16,250 break (welcome to the tournament Jim) put out Lacey & Griffin. Nige’s 21,950 new high break enough to eliminate the champs KT & Martin Cole. Jack Baden & Matt Knight got 6k up on Leon & Phil, but Phil was up to the task with 14k break.
The Quarters followed, Alan Donovan & Stu Mepham ended Alan & Jeans fine weekend. Traff’s 23,310 (another new high break) saw off Phillips and Sheard. Rick & TJ had a leg 1 lead but Millward & Oakley beat them. Phil’s 21,980 opener 21,430 too many for Nige missing his first one up…
Into the 4 leg semis – fair to say Alan & Stu had their chance against Mark & Matt, and went 2-1 up about 3k up, but a 10,450 in leg 4 saw Mark & Matt through. Also Jim & Joe had chances on the tricky table 6 against Leon & Phil – they won leg 1 against the break, but found themselves 2-1 and 17k down after 3 legs. Jim opened with 5k but conceded as not on time to win.
So,,,the final Leon in first not opening with many, but Phil in making a lead of 8k. Matt getting them back and looks set to win leg 1 against the break but leaves the one up short pretty much level. Phill finished off to win leg 1. Leg 2, Mark off on 3k, Phil steps in makes 17k, Phil and Leon 2-0 up, Phil’s break to come….looks over. Leg 3 Phill off on 8k, not enough….Mark steps in to make 10k, so now only 12k down with Matt’s break to come. Matt makes no mistake in decider with 17k to win the title for him and Mark together for the first time. Terrific final which had some twists and turns… So there you go the winners were then
Winners – Mark Trafford & Matt Jones (£50 each + break at Suncliff Hotel (courtesy of the hotel)) Runners-up – Leon Beer & Phil Collins (£25 each) Semi Finalists – Jim Millward & Joe Oakley/ Alan Donovan & Stu Mepham (£10 each) Plate Winners – Janet Burns & Jon Scoones (£20 each) Plate Runners Up – Darren Isard & Terry Isard (£10 each) High Break – Mark Trafford 23,310 (£20) Ladies High Break – Jean Brackenridge 6,710 (£20) Merit Prize – Alan Brackenridge (£10) (subject to the drugs test!)

Before I sign off some thank yous –
Thanks to the hotel, they took everything on board the Chelle fed back to them last year. They have been so welcoming to us and helped us put on a great event.
Thanks to Kim (Michelle’s) friend for doing the raffles (raised over £500!)
Huge thanks to Stu M, Geoff, Dennis, Steven, Martin, Jason (sorry if missed anyone) for helping with tables. Not just the transporting in and out but the setting up. They were of a fantastic standard, the three 20k plus breaks and the many 10k breaks are testament to that.
Chelle and Sami for sorting out booking etc, 51 pairs actually booked down to 49 when event started but still 2 more than last year. Plus many non players also were there as part of our party.
Big thanks to Matt, voice still going but did brilliantly to keep it all on track, played pretty well too by all accounts. Couldn’t do it without him.
Jean for her hard work doing the quizzes. Enjoyed watching Curt’s head hurting trying to work out the bar billiards players brain teasers… And thanks to Curt for driving the tables back as Gerry unable to drive.
I suppose I can’t sign off without mentioning the Friday night incident. We all should remember when entering AEBBA events we are representing bar billiards and the AEBBA when we play. In this event in particular we have a very new relationship with the hotel, who have bent over backwards to support us make it the best event possible. So behaviour like I witnessed on Friday night is not acceptable and reflects badly on bar billiards as a whole. Thankfully it is not a common occurrence at these weekends but nevertheless not something that we want repeated. We want people to have fun and enjoy themselves of course but be mindful of their behaviour. Unfortunately in this case the behaviour caused another player, Michelle, to be unable to play the following day due to injury and she had no part to play in the altercation that happened. The AEBBA will discuss this and look into what actions that need to be taken.
On a brighter note, the hotel do want us back! I expect it will be March next year but sure that when further details are known there will be an update on here.

Great work by everyone putting the event together, everyone from Notts had a cracking time, and we hope to bring even more pairs next year!
Just a quick one for the stats, our players first name should read "Saf" rather than "Sal", would it be OK to correct that please?
