Quiz III on Thomas Hardy's The Mayor of Casterbridge (rating: difficult)
Almost 'A' level stuff this, but anyone who has read the book should be able to find the answers. The Mayor is a recommended read, extremely well-written and one of the easiest books to read as it flows so well.
So here's a further chance to pick up 2 points per question.
26.When Susan and Henchard marry, what does Henchard want Elizabeth-Jane to do ? 27.Why do Elizabeth-Jane and Farfrae both arrive at the granary ? 28.How does Henchard force Abel Whittle to dress at work ? Why ? and what is Farfrae's reaction ? 29.Why does Henchard's entertainment fail ? 30.According to Susan, when did Henchard's real daughter die ? 31.In her letter to Henchard, what reason does Lucetta give for inviting Elizabeth-Jane to live with her ?
........and for 3 points each,
32.Who is the most admired man in Casterbridge ? 33.Who 'read omnivorously' ? 34.Who has a 'flexuous gait' and is 'simply pretty' ? 35.Who is younger than her companion, but more of a 'sage' ?
Good luck ! I've a feeling you'll need it !

Excellent stuff, H&J.
2 points each for 30 and 31 and 2 plus bonus point for 28 as all three parts were answered correctly. Fancy making his poor employee go to work minus his trousers ! The time-frame for 30) was "about three months" by the way.
3 points each for 33,34 and 35. 32 was not the answer I was looking for, but I'll give a point because it could have been true at one stage, albeit briefly ! Henchard behaved like a bit of a pig at the corn auctions and would have been despised for that - but on his way up to the position of Mayor - yes, he must have been admired up to a certain point in time..............
26,27,29 and 32 to get. Leaderboard: [glow=red,2,300]H&J 16pts[/glow]

All spot on once more, and the answer to 32 is so obviously Farfrae that I'll give you the other point for that one, making Maximum points again !
