Quiz on Thomas Hardy's The Mayor of Casterbridge (rating: difficult)
Almost 'A' level stuff this, but anyone who has read the book should be able to find the answers. The Mayor is a recommended read, extremely well-written and one of the easiest to read as it flows so well.
So here's a rare chance to pick up 2 points per question.
1. What is Henchard's trade ? 2. Why has his family travelled to Weydon Priors ? 3. What does Henchard say Susan "had no business to take" ? 4. Why does Henchard stop looking for his wife and child ? 5. Where does Susan first become aware that her 'situation' is improper, and how does her 'enlightenment' come about ? 6. How does Susan explain her search for Henchard to Elizabeth-Jane ? 7. What is the general 'shape' of Casterbridge ? 8. Who has supplied the bad corn to the millers and bakers ? 9. When does Solomon Longways say Henchard will be able to drink alcohol again ? 10.When does Henchard say he will take back the 'growed wheat', and what is the implication of this ?
And for 3 points per question, identify these characters in the book :
11. "The man was of fine figure, swarthy, and stern in aspect" 12. Who said kindly "the little one too - the more the merrier ?" 13. ".....her freedom from levity of character and the extreme simplicity of her intellect" 14. "They walked with joined hands.....the act of simple affection" 15. "The desire -sober and repressed - of her heart was to see, to hear, and to understand."
Good luck ! I've a feeling you'll need it !

Very precise answers again: 2pts each for nos. 3) 4) 6) 7) 9) and 10). Just to add in relation to 7) Casterbridge is of course Dorchester, which being an old Roman town has four leafy avenues enclosing it to make it square-shaped. And 10) Henchard (who is also the answer to no.8)) believes the task to be impossible, thus implying that he has not the slightest intention to compensate the millers and bakers !
You passed on 5) - Susan becomes aware of the embarrassment of her situation when at Falmouth: a friend ridicules her acceptance of it.
As you are the only one who took part in this you get bonus points for effort, to bring it up to the maximum points available.
