There were some excellent performances from Surrey players in the 2022 Sussex Open played on Sunday. Most prominent was that of Gary Powell who had enjoyed an excellent half-season in the Redhill League (three times a champion) after missing most of the first half through injury: Gary made it all the way to the Semi-Final with wins over Chris Oakley, Alan Donovan (winner of the recent Surrey Open), Mark James and Melvyn Johnson. Only the eventual winner and current World Champ Mark Trafford was able to get the better of him. Anita Blackman made it to the Last 16, well done to her. David Jones made progress in the Main comp before coming up against Bucks and England's Matt Jones who made a first leg playout of 20100. David made a good effort of 17720 in reply. In the Plate Competition. John Slee made the quarters and Michael Wilson the semis. Here, Mark Fraser carried off the kudos by making the Final. What a varied fortune he experienced on the day, though, on the wrong end of 43k from Trafford to begin with, before accounting for Jim Balchin, Pete Sainsbury, John Slee (with 23k over 2 legs) and Cliff Slade. It was then left to Roffey-based Paul Jobbins to overcome him with some steady play.
