Next Saturday, the 30th, the Brewery Tap intend to take four players across to the Papillion Pub in Southend which is right on the sea front.
The Papillion is a new venue, they have only had their table for a few weeks and at the moment it doesn't get played too much, mainly because although they have a set rules they don't know the basics of the game.
It is our intentions to give them a bit of support, help and try to teach them what we know about playing the game. OK we know that wont take long to do and obviously we can only really show them how to play 4 pin so if any three pin players fancy a day in Southend please let me know and feel free to come along and join the party.
We feel it is important to try and help them and aim to be there around noon on the Saturday and stay there until early evening.
Dave

I was joining the lads in Sarfend-on-mud but the train drivers have decided to have a day off on Saturday so I'm scuppered.

What an amazing day in Southend at the Papillion. Four players from Sudbury made the short-ish trip into Essex, arriving at 11-45 to be greeted by a already busy pub. 15 minutes spent levelling the table and then the fun started. Due to the number of their people wanting to join in it was decided that the best way to make sure that they all got plenty of games was to play doubles, Jeremy and Jeff teamed up to make one pair from Sudbury leaving Brett and myself to make up the second pair. Landlord John then put twenty £1 coins on the table and play started. A record of the scores were kept just incase tommo wanted to see them. As the day progressed the home players certainly got better while we struggled with the effects of alcohol. Pairs changed and some single games were also thrown in and after over 6 hours of playing only Jeff remained undefeated. Our hosts were incredible and made us all so welcome, the fish and chips mid afternoon went down almost aswell as the beer and there is already talk of a return fixture in the near future, possible entries into the world four pin in March and even a chance of a Southend team in the 4x4. We also hope to make our trip to the Papillion an annual event, moving it forward to January or February next year when hopefully the costs for accommodation will be lower.

The Suffolk initiative is to be admired. Perhaps the seed has been sown for an Essex league. Remember, the thriving Norwich League did not exist prior to 2006 and formed from an annual challenge between two pubs, the Rosary Tavern and the Kings Head.

Tommo we do our best to promote bar billiards when ever and where ever we can and the Southend fixture will certainly remain in the calendar. To be honest with Norwich seemingly uninterested in taking over the EA open there could even be an opportunity for the papillion to host it along with the help and support of the Suffolk BBA. They are truly a great bunch of people, it's just a shame that at he moment there are no other tables close by.

A seaside Open - especially in Southend-on-Sea - sounds a mouth-watering prospect for the future. But as you say, Suffolk BBA would have to run it for them. And the annual visit by your boys is a great idea - especially bringing the date forward to January. Unfortunately the two (alleged) closest venues, at Battlesbridge and South Benfleet, are of dubious existence: both have a website which only mentions Pool, so that may have replaced the bar billiards. Papillion will also need to pit their skills against those of equivalent standard as they get established.....baby steps and all that. The other 4-Pin leagues in the east of England appear to be satisfied with their own grass roots existence and would probably cite your League's high standard as the reason they won't compete nationally.

Reading through this reminds me of the Kipling Challenge Perhaps Suffolk would like to revive a similar event, I think they have at least one of the skills needed

Sudders will not know the heck you're on about, so this should help to elucidate: docs.google.com/document/d/1FEfQh9Ngu8kMo39jiuR2li2QZq4TYUdOpqOAAb6ClRI/pub

Well done on promoting bar billiards and what a great idea and as Tommo says who knows what will come from this but we all need to try and promote the game if it is to thrive again

Read the link again, Bernie. Northants' 8-counties challenge (top bit) was something completely separate and entirely admirable in itself. The Kipling Challenge (the follow-on bit) was Mid-Sussex & Co's response in the form of a 280-mile round journey to play Northants in a friendly. Trying to work out why you weren't involved, you must have emigrated by then. Northants have since repeated their multiple counties challenge, they did nine this time I think including a visit to the Old Oak. No Kipling involved. You're welcome.
