Sav,
From my time in the navy I am sure that Hemp and Sisal are different. Hemp is slightly darker in colour and not as strong as sisal. Hemp also rots quicker.
I maybe wrong though.

Three of you took up my general knowledge challenge and have given some commendable answers.
MicktheHammer - back from your hols, hope you had a nice time. Perfect answers to 2) and 3). 3pts for 2) and 8pts for 3).
Regg3y - bonus point for the dolphin fish. Is it related to the tuna ? 5pts for your complete set of answers to no.6) Number 8) 4pts only out of 5, Brass being of course an alloy. Re your postscript about the Sisal and Hemp - a brave man indeed to challenge Sav the superbrain. Without trying to adjudicate , I'm giving you an extra point as you mentioned specifically the Agave plant. You too score 11pts.
Finally, Sav. Well it sounded so plausible, but in fact Magdalene is not a correct answer. Up until the 1970's there were four women-only colleges at Oxford and two at Cambridge. One by one they have opened up to both sexes until there is now just one left at each. So two points each for the women-only ones and one point each for the others which started off as womens colleges and are now joint admission. Question 5) never doubted the mad scientist ;) 5pts. Question 6) well, regg3y got there first but you were there within the half-hour, so a bonus point, if only for the poor crushed beetles. :( Question 7) Correct and the 3pts on offer are yours. Question 8) Again, Regg3y got the elements first, but I'll be generous and allow 2pts a throw for the compounds which you have correctly named. And 1pt for being correct over brass being an alloy. I make that 16 in all.
Leaderboard: 1. Sav 16pts 2=MicktheHammer 11pts 2=Regg3y 11pts
Left to get: 1 & 4

Tommo,
I had Dolphin Fish in the West Indies 1978. Served with plain boiled rice and spinage (which I normally dislike intensely but this time was good) and covered with a lemon butter sauce. The flesh was alike in texture to tuna but it was white in colour.
It could, of course, be a local name for something else.
1. Am I right in thinking that there is a Magdelene college in each?

The meal sounded delicious, Reggy. When dining out I quite often have salmon in mornay sauce with rice, steamed vegetables and a sprig of parsley. Tuna is a very versatile fish, I love it in sandwiches or a jacket potato with mayonnaise.
On to business......there are five college names common to Oxon and Cantab, and an additional two which are not quite an exact match. Magdalene college Cambridge is one of them (Magdalen without the 'e' for Oxford). Give that man a point !

Great answers Mick.
1. College names common to both : Corpus Christi; Jesus; Pembroke; St Johns; Trinity, and the more recent Wolfson (Oxon founded '65, Cantab also '65 but as University college, renamed '72). College names almost common to both: Magdalen(e) (Regg3y got that) and as you quite rightly say: Queen's (Oxford) and Queens' (Cambridge). 8pts in all.
4. Womens only colleges for 2pts: St Hildas' (Oxford); Newnham, New Hall and Lady Cavendish (Cambridge). Originally founded as women's colleges but now mixed for 1pt : Somerville, Lady Margaret Hall, St Hugh's (Oxford) and Gifton (Cambridge) - which became mixed in 1977. Margo's sister's son attends St Anne's (or Stan's as he calls it) so I know it not to be a women's college. 12pts in all.
Quiz ended thus: 1.MicktheHammer 31pts 2. Sav 16pts 3. Regg3y 12pts
