I am pleased to announce the group of players selected to play for England in our home tie against Guernsey. This will be played over the Sussex open weekend on the evening of Saturday 3rd June 2023.
It’s always great when new players are selected so I would like to congratulate Alan Donovan for making the top 12 and Dave Ingram for getting back into the line up.
I would also like to congratulate both Stuart Carruthers and John Slee who have both stepped it up this year and get their names in the mix for the first time.
Well done all
Come on England

More practice for the Open ? I hope the organizers for the Sunday tournament can make sure that the players who play on the Saturday do not go on any table they played the day before in the first round of the Open. This would help all the mere mortals that don't get that chance. Good luck to all taking part and Happy Christmas everyone. Hope to make a return one day. Keith

Hi Curt , can I ask how the players are selected ?? Hi We have 7 players from 5 different counties who make up the selection team. We normally meet before the AEBBA AGM. Nigel supply’s stats for around the top 30 players for the previous year and sends them out to all those involved. We all pick our own top 12 in the order of preference . For those that attend we then go round the room and give our selections in order including reserves. Then its just a case of who has the most votes gets in. The top 6/7 players are usually unanimous then the votes can get lower as we get to the last places. This seems to be a fair way of doing it . I’ve been involved in this process for the last 7/8 years and I may be wrong but I think there has been someone new into the team in most years. It’s always good to see new names appear on the selections but this is always as a result of them playing well and getting through to latter stages of competitions. Thanks Curt

Keith Hi Keith That’s definitely something to look at but 7 of the England team may well be playing in the local Sussex comps that day as well so could be difficult to make sure no one plays on a table they may be on in first round of the open. I’m no expert when it come to scheduling but it could be difficult I guess ?? Curt

Thanks Curt for the info, sounds fair, some of the top rated players are not in the team, is that because they are not available ??

Thanks Curt for the info, sounds fair, some of the top rated players are not in the team, is that because they are not available ?? Some of the top players have informed me over the last 6/7 years that they don’t want to be considered for selection anymore. Some top players haven’t performed as well as they used to in opens so that opens the door for others who have performed to get spoken about . There’s no exact science to it really but the stats Nigel produces do help as it can be difficult to remember who has done what over the course of a year. Thanks Curt

So what happened in the two Internationals ? It seems to have gone all quiet on the Western Front ! Copied from Facebook by oge Guernsey retain the interinsular v jersey. Trevor Gallienne becomes the individual channel island champion. And a Guernsey select team beat the England ladies in the international. Good night at the office.

Thanks Bob. Perhaps Darren would care to provide some further details such as the score-lines for the two matches, and who Trevor beat in the C.I. Championship. For the Timeline.Would like to add a comment that Guernsey are no longer the poor relations and are now a force to be reckoned with, especially on home soil: Bob Chapple winning his second Open, and an all-Guernsey Pairs final.

Perhaps Darren would care to provide some further details such as the score-lines for the two matches, and who Trevor beat in the C.I. Championship. For the Timeline.Trevor beat Dave Lomax in the C.I. Championship Singles, I believe it was Trevor's 25th appearance in the final which is a truly remarkable record. In the Inter-Island game, Guernsey retained the cup on aggregate score. I know that Trevor gave Guernsey a good start with a 10k score in the first, only for Dave Lomax to level the match with 7k in the second game. I am not sure who played the next 2 games (I was scoring one of the Guernsey Select v England Ladies games) but I believe that they were both won by Guernsey in fairly close games, Emma Noel pulled a leg back for Jersey in an incredible 5th leg against Paul Dyer (she won on the last ball with a score of 260 v 220 after both players had lost numerous scores) which left Graham Le Monnier needing to win the last leg by about 7-8k to win the match for Jersey, he did win but not by enough to take the match. The Guernsey Select team won by a fairly comfortable margin against the England Ladies Team, although a lot of the games were very close and could have gone either way.

Thanks Dave, should give me enough to go on to add something meaningful. Well done on your Runner-up achievement in the 2023 Guernsey Open.

For the forum, results are best easily typed into Excel, copied and the 'tablify' function used to generate the nice tables on the forum.

Will the results for the International Guernsey Select v England Ladies count towards Ranking Points ? There hasn’t been ranking points in internationals for many years so there will be none for this match. Thanks Curt
